This is one of those problems that occurs sporadically in electronically controlled cars. The only way to diagnose it is with the dealer-only software and other diagnostic tools. Be prepared to leave the car for a few days since the problem is intermittent. I'm sorry to have to recommend any dealer's service department but ti might be your only way out at this point. You might find a competent independent Volvo shop which would be better than taking it to a dealer. The key word her is "competent" with emphasis on "well-equipped".

i replaced a s-80 throttle body once [easy job] but found that along with the updated part the computer had to be flash reprogrammed to recognize the new part [had to flat tow customers car to dealer to get running again ] the time lost+tow was twice what the job paid . reccommend to dealer sorry.

before this problem was there any surging on the engine . my friend 99s80 was having same problem surging and stalling sometimes consulted dealer who said to replace to replace throttle body (electronic) six hundred bucks no way .remove throttle body ,cleaned with caution ,replace .car drive fine. contributing problem was short trips and gunk was building up
