I am thinking about buying a Volvo that has a faulty odometer. Does anyone know if I will have any problems registering the car because of this? Can if be fixed? Thanks.

You shouldn't, most states don't require an odometer statement on a car that old. Anything can be fixed but would require either replacing or repairing the odometer which may cost more than your paying for it

There are plastic gears that run the odometer, if someone resets the mileage while the vehicle is moving the gears can jam, causing them to break. After a vehicle is 10 years old or older they are mileage exempt so you won't have a problem registering. As far as fixing the odometer I would search on-line for a used one, they may be hard to find since the older 240's seem to run forever!

It`s a common problem on 240/740 volvos, an erratic fuel gauge is another widespread fault. So check that as well, apart from those 2 mild irritations these big volvos run for ever if properly looked after. You should have no problems registering the 240.

Hopefully that didnt happen on purpose. Yes it can be fixed. And when you go to register it maybe they will do somthing like 10,000 miles for every year since 1986. But if you do get it fixed before you register it you could just act like you only have the amount of miles that the odometer already has on it.
