Hi there,
Your vehicle/ecm needs to gain info for ecm to fuel correctly so there is a oxygen sensor usually before the catalyst which monitors fuel as it has burned before the cat, the cat then removes nox gases and then there is usually a sensor after the cat to monitor cat values to ensure the cat does it's job and now that we have euro 4 emissions the rear sensor has a direct affect on engine fuelling, sorry to be too techy. You also have temp sensors which also affect how the oxygen sensor reacts too, these sensors all send info back to the ecm and the ecm has fuel mapping pre-programmed and it quickly works out what is needed to fuel engine efficiently. There is more but it would take all night to type and would probably bore you!
Cheers
