Buying & Selling - May 2007

I am looking to purchase a used vehicle and am thinking of purchasing certified used. I have thought of going with a BMW and have found several with low miles that I think are for a good price. Many of my friends tell me that they are good cars but expensive to repair. Would I be better off purchasing say a Ford or other make because parts would be less expensive? Which would give me the best service overall. I drive less than 20,000 a year and have had my current car for 10 years, so I like to keep a vehicle and to not have to drive the latest and greatest. Thanks for your time in answering this question.

2007 Toyota Camry LE - V4, 21k miles, no alloy wheels, no rear spoiler, 36k bumper to bumper coverage and 100k powertrain warranty - $18,000

2006 Mazda 6 Sedan - V6, 19k miles, alloy wheels, rear spoiler, 50k miles bumper to bumper, 60k powertrain warranty - $15,700.

Additionally the Camry's sound system is better and also it has a hook up thing for ipod. I personally like the exterior of the Mazda 6 better and the interior of the Camry better.

Which one would you go for considering everything? What do you recommend? I need to make a decision in the next couple of hours.... please

Would I be better off getting my credit up and fixing my car and waiting a year or would a car dealer let me finance with not so perfect credit?

We've got a regular sedan-type car right now, but we just found out we're expecting our third little one, and it's just not going to be big enough. We need to get either a van or SUV, but our credit is awful and we can't afford a bigger payment or a second payment. So what should we do? Is there any way to trade in our car (which we bought about 1 year ago and still have lots to pay on) and get a bigger one without having to pay waaaaay more? The only thing I can think of is to buy a used van from a private individual, but I'm kind of scared it won't be reliable, and it would probably still be more than we can afford.... Help!! :)
Thanks so much!!!!

That's really only worth 7.4K. I want to trade it in for something better. No matter which new car I pick, the price is gonna set me back. But won't I be in a better position with a nicer vehicle?

I'm looking into buying a used car - I did a carfax report on it and it looks like it's been in an accident and had some work done. How much does this affect the car's performance? If I do decide to buy it, I'm going to get it checked out by my mechanic. If they say that it looks to be in good condition, is it safe to buy even with an accident history? Or should i avoid it all together?

I'm thinking about buying a new BMW 328i coupe. I've looked at lease options. Monthly payment is significantly lower compared to buying but all the money is gone 100%. Am I assuming correctly that when I sell it 24 months later I will ultimately end up spending less vs. a lease? Thanks

Does offering to put $10-12K down while negotiating for this type of a vehicle get the purchase price down significantly (a few K's) from the MSRP? Thanks

This is the situation. I have a financed car two years into the finance. The car is worth more than the remaining balance by about $6,000. I would like to trade it for a cheaper car and get the difference as well as lower my monthly payments. How this should be done? Is it possible? Do car dealers help in this situation? Please be as specific as you can. Thanks so much for your help!

I own an 05 Chevy Avalanche (well not really own, I am making payments) - the payments are about $470/month. I was thinking about trading this in for a used car (Accord, Camry, Maxima, Mazda 6 etc.) to essentially reduce my monthly pymts. I am approved for 7.49% rate from the bank. I will have about $3k to $4k negative equity that I may have to roll in to the new car. This car most probably be traded in after 3 years since I am planning to buy an SUV. My question is does it make sense to trade it in now or keep making the payments for the next 3 years and trade it in then. My truck takes about 15 mpg in gas.....

Sales assoc. told me to give $500 deposit & they would get a certain car for me. They didn't have the car I wanted on the lot so they were to dealer trade one. I was told that their were plenty of the the type of car I wanted. I waited 4 days and was told that they were having trouble locating the Honda Cr-V EX that I wanted, but would I settle for an EX-L or LX model. I told them no and that I wanted my deposit back. I was told before I gave them my credit card # that it was a refundable deposit. I seem to be getting the run around. After I told them I wanted my deposit back, they tried to get me to give them until noon the next day to try to find something. I said No, I just wanted my deposit back. I said I wanted confirmation that my credit card had been refunded sent by fax. The sales assoc. said OK and give him a few minutes and he would call before he sent it. I waited for 2 hours. Then they told me the lady who knows how to refund my credit card had already went home.

A friend went and purchased a new car from a major dealership. The car was purchased after 5pm, all papers were signed, and he left. After a couple of days, the dealership called saying that they couldn't get the loan to go through with any lender and they want the car back. Can they legally retake the car after all the contracts were signed? My friend has already taken out full coverage insurance on the car. Any help will be appreciated.

If you read my other question, you already know I am SUV shopping. I have my list down to 4. Chrysler Aspen, Chrysler Pacifica, Lexus GX, BMW X5. And I have a pretty good idea which one I want. What do you guys think? Anyway, I went to a dealership out of town to look for one and asked for a quote. The salesman left and as I was walking around the showroom I overheard what turned out to be the sales manager saying he wasn't in the business of writing quotes. He was in the business of selling cars. She should come back when she's ready to buy the GD car. ?????? If he only knew what he just did. She is going to buy the car. She is also toying with the idea of buying a present for herself. She also has a daughter getting a car for her birthday. She has a son who will need a car next year. That is at least 4 sales lost. I'm sorry, is it out of the question to expect a quote? I'm not buying socks here, I'm buying a 40-50k car!!! I want to shop around. At least I never have to see him again!

I have recently decided to purchase an 07 Xterra. I have yet to pay for the car. I have filled out a lot of papers such as a "you owe/We owe, a power of attorney concerning title transfer and some other ones. The car i chose is not at the lot. They promised me the car the following day, but three days later no car. They stated that they were having difficulty with another dealership and they had drop the ball. They even said that they were going to drive the car approx 300 miles to my location. I stated that would not be acceptable. There customer service has been quite lame. I had to call them to find out the status of my vehicle. I placed no money down and gave them no sort of retainer. They also wanted to run another credit check after I stated that I have a blank check from my bank. Can I ditch this loser dealership?
