If you read my other question, you already know I am SUV shopping. I have my list down to 4. Chrysler Aspen, Chrysler Pacifica, Lexus GX, BMW X5. And I have a pretty good idea which one I want. What do you guys think? Anyway, I went to a dealership out of town to look for one and asked for a quote. The salesman left and as I was walking around the showroom I overheard what turned out to be the sales manager saying he wasn't in the business of writing quotes. He was in the business of selling cars. She should come back when she's ready to buy the GD car. ?????? If he only knew what he just did. She is going to buy the car. She is also toying with the idea of buying a present for herself. She also has a daughter getting a car for her birthday. She has a son who will need a car next year. That is at least 4 sales lost. I'm sorry, is it out of the question to expect a quote? I'm not buying socks here, I'm buying a 40-50k car!!! I want to shop around. At least I never have to see him again!

I didn't bother to wait for the salesman. He came out of the office and looked at me as I was shaking my head and walked out the door.

I used to sell cars, and the sad fact is, when someone walks off the lot without buying a car right there, statistically, the odds that they will return are 1 in 9.

So with that said, there are 2 reasons why he wouldn't write you a quote. 1 - odds are he'll never see you again anyway. and 2 - If you walk in to any other dealership with his best price in hand and ask for someone to beat it - guaranteed, everyone will beat it if that is all they have to do to sell a car.

When looking to get the best price on a car, the worst thing you can do is ask for a quote so you can shop. You either won't get one OR you'll get what is called a "rocket ship" (which is a fake, ridiculousely low quote that no-one can do). With the "rocket ship" they figure at least you will come back to the dealer when no-one can match their price and they get one more chance at you. Of course, chances are you'll be so angry that they won't honor the price for whatever reason, you'll walk out the door while cussing them, BUT every so often by that time you are so tired of visiting dealerships and getting the run around, you might just buy the car there anyway to get it over with. Don't laugh, it happens all the time.

What you need to do is negotiate his absolute best possible price AS IF you are willing to buy right then and there. I know it seems dishonest, but it is the only way to get the best price to use as a quote.

You did nothing wrong at all. He was just a sexist pig, cause if you were a guy this would of never happen. A similar situation happen to me, everytime I would go alone I felt like they were moking me. I finally bought my car and went in with my dad, but this time I choosed a dealership that had a women and she was really nice. Dont give your business where you dont get respect.

After you buy your SUV I suggest you go back and see him and tell him I got a quote and I bought it, could of been your sale but you are in the business to make quotes too bad.

Better luck next time. Hopefully that dealership is not too much out of your way cause the satisfaction is not describable. ( He called me to get back to me about my question 2 days later and I replied to him too late I already bought the car somewhere else, he was so pissed he hung up on me, never felt better.)

Look, what he just did was bad for business. he may be in the business of selling, but he is also in what is ultimately a customer service business. Does he want you to give him a blank check?? Screw him...In fact, I would call the regional headquarters for the company he works for and complain. The last thing they want is for this to go up on a blog somewhere.

If I were you I'd make sure the manager knows of this...

I was shopping for a couch (I know not as much as a car) and the salesperson @ one store was rude, so after I bought a couch I back and showed him and his manager the receipt for an identical couch from another store (an expensive couch - not just $600-$700 couch

Hell no you didn't do anything wrong at all! I can't believe he even did that. That is his job, he should be more than happy that you weren't 'just looking.' You asking for the quote should have showed him that you are looking to really buy one soon. I wouldn't give him my money. Very bad for business!!!
