i run a small home biz and this is my first year to file tax as such. i don't have all the gas receipts properly and even worst i don't have a mileage log either. as long as i can in some way include reasonable mileage on my tax return i don't mind even if it could be less than actual miles. so,

1-what's the current figure for miles deduction provided by irs?

2-how do include that on my return?

My husband and I moved into my sister's home to help her out for a year. We pay rent, and he has done quite a lot of work on the house, including the purchase of building materials, paint, etc... Is his labor and cost for materials, tax deductible...and if so, where could he claim this?

Ok, I'm doing my someone's taxes this year. He worked in a lab at USC (University of South Carolina) over the summer and earned $900 and the federal income tax withheld was $71.30. He turned 18 on November 17th last year.
Can I file a tax return for him with the 1040EZ?
I think that I can, but I'm not sure!

I am contemplating entering into a partnership with my brother mainly to invest in securities and/or make loans to other businesses. Basically, we anticipate the income to be mainly from buying/selling securities and from interest income from the loans. How is gain or loss computed? Say the partnership sells securities at a gain, does the partnership recognize gain or do my brother and I recognize the gain and report it on our 1040? What about interest income? Does the partnership recognize ordinary income gain and if some of the money is distributed to my brother or I, will we recognize gain as ordinary or capital gain?

Can you please help me, I was 1099 and not I am W-2. So as 1099 I did not have any taxes taken out so (according to Turbo tax) I owe $9,000. However Now I am W-2 and have a ton taken out each month, I was thinking I could not file this year and then file both next year and pay the difference. Is this wise? If not, any suggestions? I can't afford $9,000. As well, if I did a payment plan how do I set it up and how long is it amortized for...thanks so much for the advise/help

I sold a home for the tax year 2006. I was charged an excise tax by the county and state. Can I take this tax off on my tax return? Would I list it as a sales tax or property tax? Or would it be listed under the adjusted sales price of the house?

I am married. When I filled out my W4 for 2006, I selected the box that reads "Married, but wihtholding at the Single higher rate" to be on the safe side. All my paychecks report that I am being taxed Federal-1 and State-1 but come to find out, my taxable status is 'married.' My employer confirmed that this was THEIR error. I now owe $2000 to the government, including penalties for choosing the wrong tax status. Should I pay the $2k or is my employer liable? Should I ask my company to pay?

100% of the 401k money went towards my first house. I am sure I was penalized by the state and Fed. Is it too late to say that I used that money for the purchase of my first home and try to recoupe the money that I paid in penalties. It was over ten thousand dollars in my 401k at the time. I live in California.

I'm helping my ex-boyfriend file his taxes online today.

We have a 3 year old child together, but since we broke up last summer and moved apart in the fall, our son lives with me. I already filed and recieved the refund, so that part's done. Can my ex claim my son in any way, or does he pretty much file his return as if he didn't have a child?

Also, does he file as Head of Household? He lives with 2 other roommates now, so I didn't know how to answer that question.

Lastly, my ex pays me child support, but not court-ordered. We're still friends and he does it voluntarily, it's not messy. There is a question about supporting a child that doesn't live with you...should he list the monetary support he's given in 2006, or since it's not court-ordered support will it not even count, so to speak?

Thanks for the help!

I found a error on our taxes filed this year. They had filed my capatial gains all as short term gains vs long term. I had around 4,500 of long term capital gain. Our joint income was around 70,000. What is the difference on ther error of it all being in short term vs long term? I called out accountant and waiting for a reply back. What is the process and is there any additional cost to me? Also what is the tax saving from the mistake?

I worked as a day care provider for a friend of mine who had three kids. I was paid by the state of Michigan rather than the parent so instead of a W2 form, I just received a letter from the Department of Human Services stating how much I was paid throughout the year. This was my first year doing that kind of work and I would prefer to file my taxes myself but I am not sure how to claim that income or what form to use.
