My husband and I file joint married for Federal Taxes. For state taxes I am an Illinois resident and my husband is a Florida resident and he is exempt because he is in the military. Would I file married single for state. I used Turbo tax to do my taxes and it included my husbands income and says that I owe. His income should not be included.

I just took on a part time second job as a subcontractor delivering newspapers. The job pays 380 a week with a gas reimbursement that varies considering what gas prices are. At the moment is $25-30 dollars a week. Do I have to pay taxes on the gas reimbursement? Also, can I file and pay taxes every quarter with a 1099? (i'd rather pay the taxes over having to worry about owing money come April). I have no idea if this second job will put me in a different tax bracket either I'm currently in the poor :D end of it. I make about 20k a year so this second job is basically going to double my yearly salary Lastly, I have my regular job which is a W2 set up. When tax time rolls around in April will the 1099 be part of that if I'm paying it quarterly and if so will they have to be filed separately? I have never worked with a 1099 set up and its confusing to me at this point.

Thanks a bunch. :D

ps Not sure if it helps any but I claim 0 dependents with my W2 job.

I didn't earn much this year, and so I didn't pay a lot of taxes, and so my refund will be small despite having a bunch of stuff to itemize. I want to know how much of it, if any, I can add to next year's itemization.

kay so last year was my first year filing taxes and so my mom did it for me on turbo tax... Everything went good, got my return direclty deposited and that was that... My mom said to me that I was supose to have sent my w-2 to the irs last year... BUT I DIDNT... She said I shouldnt have recieved my return if I didnt send them in... Is this true?
This year I did it on my own or tried to at least. When I went to file it online and send it out paying with credit card... It says that I need my AGI from last year... to confirm who I am so I can do an electronic signature... How do I find that out? I dont have or dont know where my w-2? forms are from last year... My mom wouldnt know... And turbo tax doesnt have it.... or they would have transfered it over... So what do I do... Do I need to find my forms from last year and send them in with this years? Or do they NOT correspond with each other at all??? Im so confused... So this is why so many ppl hate tax season? lol Please help me out

I am a student, and haven't filed a tax return in 2003, 2004, or 2005.
During those years I havn't made any money, but I own a few stocks which I have traded regularly. Therefore, the IRS must assume my cost basis is a zero on the stocks reported to them on the 1099 by the brokerage company holding my stocks.
My question, how can I file for 2003-2005 and clear up this mess. I made only $300 in short-term capital gains in 2004, but in 2003, 2005, and 2006, I have carried a loss.
Thank you for your help!!

After seeing a short film on the internet about this, It has raised a concern that the government IS pulling the biggest fraud. Everyone within the government and IRS skirts the issue, but no one seems to be able to produce a black and white copy of the law...because it doesn't exist after the 1912 Supreme Court ruling saying the government could no longer impose a federal tax. The only law that exist says that it is "voluntary" to pay tax....The Reagen and Clinton admin addresssed this but decided it was a "back-burner' issue...gee I wonder why???

I have lived in my house for more than 2 years - enabling me to avoid taxes on the gains from the sale. I know that if I utilize all the gains to aid in the purchase of another property, I do not have to pay taxes on the gains. However, my question is: do I have to pay taxes on the gains that I do not reinvest into another property? Example - say I made 100K on the sale and only want to reinvest 80K - do I pay taxes on the remaining 20K?

I trusted a family member to file my return in 2004 using Turbo Tax and they said they did it electronically. When I finally discovered that it wasn't filed it was too late and not only had their computer crashed but they lost my paperwork. Two different W2's and a 1099. It was a nice amount I was to recieve back so it would be great if I could figure out what to do. HELP?

Sometimes people pay penalties and fines for messing up on taxes, other times they go to jail. What's the distinction?

I need to come up with the Gain/Loss (if there can be a Loss) for tax purposes. Is it the cost value at the time of the gift? The gift giver's cost basis? Or, is it all Gain?

Does long term vs. short term still come into play? And, does the fact that the proceeds were used towards college education have any bearing on the tax implications?

I owe this year but am not sure how it all works. I was reading some information that said the federal government will send me information after I file. Because of the amount I owe, I may have a penalty charge because not enough taxes were taken out this year. Should I file but not pay my taxes yet and wait for the federal govt. to contact me?

IRS has sent me both 2120 & 8332, both require her signature to let me claim exemptions for youngsters, she refuses to sign either. Will a copy of the divorce decree work? And if so must it be a raised seal copy from the courthouse? Thanking any and all in advance for info!

We have 2 homes the 1st was our residence until approx 2 years ago. We had a tenant for 1 full year. We have since "sold" the home to an invest. co. The way it works is everything stays in our name but they basically lease to own it and receive all tax advantages etc until it sells. I'm sure I'm not explaining this well.
Anyway, my question is this..during 05/06 we had a tenant in the home and we lost money every month, when she moved out she basically destroyed the place. We lost several thousand on rental income because we could not rent out & it just sat there. She never paid for damages/fees. We only paid a couple hundred to other people, we had to do everything ourselves & buy cleaning supplies.
Should I depreciate those 2 years (I have not as yet)? How do I enter our losses since we did most of the work, not rentable & could not afford to pay someone else to do it. The home should sell in a year or 2 and be out of our name. I am using turbo tax to file. Do I amend last year?

Is there any exception to the rule of not being able to use the standard deduction when filing separately when the other spouse filing separately itemizes? Or, can a husband (salesman with unreimbursed business expenses) file separately and itemize on a schedule A, and the wife (home business) file separately and itemize on a schedule C?

We purchased land in Dec 2006 and are in the process of building a new house on it. I was offered a better paying position with my current employer that would require me to move to another state. We have not physically lived on the property but it is our "primary residence" because we are renting the house we are living in now. Would the 2 years start from when we purchached the land or when we finish the house? Would we have to pay capital gains on the money we made if we took that gain and put it down on a new home in the state in which my new job was? Please help. Thanks

What can we do besides increase our charitable giving significantly to reduce our tax bill. We already both claim married but withhold at a higher single rate. We have one child but all of the advantages are being phased out. Should we just hvae money taken out specifically for taxes, or are there ways to reduce your tax bill that can be beneficial all the way around. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.
