If income tax was withheld from your checks, then they probably owe YOU money. So, file to get it back.
There are a number of companies that offer free on line tax preperation. Go to the IRS site to find them.

Yes, you do have to file a tax return for the earned income that you received last year.

What I would do is go to the IRS free efile site and start there. You can totally file your taxes for free since your income was so low last year--sounds like about $20,000 taxable wages. Fill out the form online using the W2 you received from your job. It sounds like you will get back most of your federal that you paid AND Earned Income Credit ( money given to low income filers) which can really be a significicant amount!

Good luck! Here is the free efile link so you can start there. Just pick a company and get started--it's so easy and as you input your info on the page, it will automatically figure any credits that you are due. :)

If your income was as an employee (W-2) then you wouldn't have to file just on that. Child support isn't considered income for tax purposes. It comes down to what type of disability you were getting and how much it was - disability is often not taxable, but some kinds can be. If you got a W-2 or other tax form for the disability, then add it to your W-2 from your five month job to get your total taxable income. Then compare that to the limit to file for your filing status. If you're filing as single, if the total is over $8450 you have to file.

You might want to file even if you aren't required to - if any federal income tax was withheld, you'd get it back, plus would get something for Earned Income Credit.

Good luck.

If you have kids, and you are eligible for earned income credit. you owe it to yourself to file. You will probably get a couple thousand back. Go to IRS.gov. That site will give you a bunch of places that will do your taxes online for free. Do not do the EZ form, no earned income credit there!!! It isn't hard, only takes maybe 1/2 and hour, and you can file electrnically online. DO IT!!!! Do it right now!!!

You don't have to claim the disability or child support.
File taxes on what you earned, you will probably get most of the taxes you paid in as a refund. If you have children, you can claim the EIC.

Fill out the forms and file just to be safe. The EZ forms are real easy to follow and you can always call the number on the back- you may have to file a state form also.

If taxes were withheld from those wages you should file. You may be entitled to a refund of those taxes paid.
