I worked as a day care provider for a friend of mine who had three kids. I was paid by the state of Michigan rather than the parent so instead of a W2 form, I just received a letter from the Department of Human Services stating how much I was paid throughout the year. This was my first year doing that kind of work and I would prefer to file my taxes myself but I am not sure how to claim that income or what form to use.

You should have received a 1099-misc from the state showing the income. But whether or not the letter you got was a 1099-misc, you'll file a schedule C or C-EZ showing the income, and a schedule SE to calculate self-employment tax. The numbers from the bottom of these two schedules will transfer to your 1040.

you file the same as anyone else.

the state obviouslt paid you as a private contractor... or a self employed person..

you'll have to file as a private company which means you are going to have to pay taxes on earned income... get ready to pay back a chunk of money to uncle sam.

there is a different form for private business to file instead of a w-2.

you can get it by going to your local tax office. or loibrary. or you can look it up on the internet. i'm pretty sure the site is called.

www.irs.gov or www.irs.org

it will give you all the specifics on how to file.
