I worked for the state of RI to do some consultant work. It was a short amount of time and a small sum of money--$2,500. I don't think I was considered an employee, but will they send me a W-2 for that work? How does claiming that on my taxes work? I'm doing my taxes online right now and the way I did it, they took about $500 out of my return. That seems a bit steep for only $2500 of work!

here in Missouri there is a tax on food. if a wealthy person goes in and buys $100.00 of groceries and a working poor person buys $100.00 of groceries, they pay the same tax. that is not fair at all, and everyone needs food. they need to do away with food tax and have or increase the luxury tax. your thoughts

I was paid in cash not via bank. Handwritten brown envelopes showed tax and NI deductions. I cannot find any of the envelopes so have no proof that as far as I was aware it was being paid. Inland Revenue want me to pay £1,500 AGAIN!!! Have contract of employment but unable to trace employer!!! Informed Inland Revenue of employment in all tax returns so it is obvious that I was not trying to evade tax and am now aware I was working for cowboy. Do I really have to pay again? HELP

I'd like to start on my taxes today but my bank hasn't sent me my interest paperwork. I can figure that out easy enough myself. But my question is, for 2006 taxes is that Jan. 06 to Dec. 06?

My empoyer filed bankrupcy in Feb of 2006. I never received any of the money they owed me yet I received a w-2 showing $8,110.96. I have no way of getting a hold of them and am wondering if it is legal for me to file this. Part two of my question...How can I find out WHERE THIS MONEY WENT? I believe my branch manager received it.

Hi,

I had a very unsucessful career as an (indenpendent contractor) online transcriptionist. In the 2 months I did this I only made $60. Actually, after the supplies I purchased for this job I'm in the hole -$10. My question is, do I need to deal with this on my tax return? I plan on asking my accountant, but I wanted to get an idea of what to expect.

Thank you!

Can some one please explain this in a little more detail?

"Taxpayers with employment income will be allowed a non refundable tax credit to compensate for employment related expenses such as work clothes and commuting expenses for wich they are not allowed specific deductions

"For 2006 the ammount on wich the credit is based will be the lesser of:
~the taxpayer's employment income,
~$250"

I understand the ammount on wich the credit is based. Is this something I am going to need to provide reciepts for? Is it just an extra $250 on your refund?

Im in BC but this is Federa taxes

H & R block for example... and is it really worth it? I've done them myself in the past and am curious if it's worth the headache.

My father in law claimed my daughter on his income taxes for the entire year of 2006. He has custody of her until the final court ruling since October 13th of 2006. Yet he filed for the entire Earned Income Credit and the dependant. I contacted the agent that he filed with and they told me that they could not tell me this info. They said I had to wait until I filed my taxes for last year and then the IRS would withhold MY income tax refund until a full investigation. Meanwhile, he has already gotten the refund for her.

ok here goes... last year we filed married filing jointly and we had 1 child. i made about 6000 and he made about 20000, we got the EITC and the child tax credit... this year i made less than 5000 and he made about 20000 again. we still have just the one child who is 2 years old now. we have a new car if that makes a difference its a 2006 saturn ion that we make payments on....
basically im trying to figure out what tax credits and such we should file to get the biggest return...can my hubby claim me as a dependent since i made less than 5000? if so would i still file my income? ...please help, i know i can look on tax prep sites and irs.gov, but im 20 years old and understand NONE OF THIS!

can you tell me what other credits and such we may qualifie for (on h&r block, it says some credits like the "aditional child tax credit" , and a few other onse that i dont remember, that it seems like were eligble, but last year we didnt recieve....

ok...thank you....

1) A Tax Preparer like H & R Block
2) Online Service
3) Computer Software
4) Snail mail (paper method)
5) Accountant
6) Does not apply

I personally prefer to have H&R Block prepare it for us cause I'm afraid I'll mess something up. I don't like the fee's they charge though and thought of filing taxes through Turbo Tax but have never used that software before if anyone has good results with it?

I've just separated from the Army where they do your taxes for you which means that I don't have a clue how to do it on my own. I am married, have a child, do not own a home but I do have investments. I know that I'll have a large refund (child tax credit, earned income credit etc...) because soldiers don't make a lot of money. I am quite computer literate. My question is, how easy is the H&R Block software to use and does it do a good job of finding everything we are entitled to? Is an H&R Block office better than the software and worth the higher cost? Lastly, how much (ballpark) does the office cost? They aren't giving me a clear idea. I'm not considering a CPA due to cost and simplicity of my tax situation.
