I've just separated from the Army where they do your taxes for you which means that I don't have a clue how to do it on my own. I am married, have a child, do not own a home but I do have investments. I know that I'll have a large refund (child tax credit, earned income credit etc...) because soldiers don't make a lot of money. I am quite computer literate. My question is, how easy is the H&R Block software to use and does it do a good job of finding everything we are entitled to? Is an H&R Block office better than the software and worth the higher cost? Lastly, how much (ballpark) does the office cost? They aren't giving me a clear idea. I'm not considering a CPA due to cost and simplicity of my tax situation.

go to the store you'll be better off. It will not be that cheap probably around $50-75 but they do have military breaks.

If you do your taxes yourself and mess up, it might come back and haunt you later or take a while. If you go to h&r block, buy the "peace of mind""in case you get audited later, they will take care of it for you pretty much. It might cost anywhere from $150-$225 to do it there but you can get the R.A.L.(refund anticipation loan) for an additional fee. You will get your refund within a couple of days if you need the money now. My refund is usually about 5K so I go that route.

Whatever you do, don't go to Block. Last year, they owed $30 million in back taxes. If they can't get their own taxes right, then why should anyone pay them to prepare taxes?

Search Google or the Yellow Pages in your area to find a reputable tax preparer. It doesn't have to be a CPA. Or, get a referral from a friend or relative.

Another option if your income was less than about $40,000 is to find a VITA or TCE site near you - see irs.gov for more info on these programs. Trained volunteers who will be familiar with the items on your return will prepare your taxes at no charge.

Your best bet is stick with the software...I do not have experience with h&r block's software...I use turbotax. It sounds like your return should be pretty simple, I would use one of these programs and efile. I went to h&r block one year and they charged me $400 although I do own a duplex so i have to claim rental income...I wouldn't use them again though!

I go to H&R and I was in the navy... just got out also the simple fact is, because if you get audited they will take care of it and you don't have to worry about the bullsh*t that comes along with it.

Turbo Tax, we bought it last year, figured it was wrong and went to H&R block to pay more money for the same answer turbo tax gave us. H&R Block sucks! never use them and never listen to their advice!

if your confident that you can do them on you own then go for the program. If not, then just go to H&r Block.
