Small Business - July 2007

I have a great idea for a small business that I think will be a huge success in my small community. But my personal credit is totally wrecked, so I don't think I'd qualify for any sort of financing. I'm not real sure how to get a grant. I read the book of the hyper guy in the crazy suit off tv who says he can help you get a grant for almost everything. It was a waste of time because it made no sense to me. Any suggestions?

We have a small repair machinery business. we want to move interstate and build up again. Hubby wants to sell the Vic state business. I don't want to sell the name. I want the same name if we start again elsewhere. Is this right? Should we just sell everything and name a new company when we do decide to do it again?

I am in a partnership for a small company in the bay area. Recently my partner and I received parking tickets. His parking ticket was issued because he parked before a No Parking sign to get the company mail from our P.O. Box. The sign was removed the next day after receiving the ticket. I received my ticket from parking in a red zone to complete a big commecial job. Our equipment for doing these jobs our mounted in the truck. So in order to complete any work the truck must be withing about 50 feet of the main entrance. The question is should the company pay for both of our tickets or are we individually responsible for the tickets on a case by case bases.

I have been in the small offset field for over 25 years. I have seen many changes over the last 5-10 years with the advent of digital technology. Now there are fewer jobs for press operators and many shops are even choosing to reduce equipment and staff and farm out much of their work.

Is there a future in this business for a top-knotch press operator, or should I consider changing over the next few years? Or, is there a change I can make within the field? Is it possible that my career may continue for the next 20 years? My experience ranges from running little old AB Dick duplicators to a Ryobi 3304 (small 4 color press).

What would you say is the future for the small commercial printing business?

I am a general practitioner, and I have a private clinic where I give medical services to people. I have registered to an academic website where they wanted me to fill an electronic application with full true information, during this application I filled an option as (not employed) , based on the fact that I have my private clinic and I am not working to an employer. Is that a wrong option done? Can I be considered as (employed)? Please tell me.

I have stayed late other times to get everything finished, but he never specifically asked me to before. I have never been paid extra for it. When I asked if I could add the extra time to my time sheet, he said "no, do the extra work during lunch", which I also don't get paid for.
