I received a letter today saying I was nominated. I went to the website and found a variety of professionals listed. I do not know how I was nominated or if it is even a true website or maybe it is just a ploy for identity theft. Any feedback from knowledgable parties would be greatly appreciated.

My family owns a small business. I get calls often from potential employers who want references for our former employees. I love to give good references when they're deserved, but my father insists on NEVER giving a negative reference--even when we know the employee in question was awful. I think he's afraid of legal repercussions, but as long as you're telling the truth about the person's work performance, isn't it better to be honest?

Whenever I see debates on the value of Social Security, they always focus on retirement and how much better someone would be if they could invest 12.8% of their income in a retirement account.
This always bugs me since Social Security offers quite a few benefits that are not usually discussed.(http://www.pueblo.gsa.gov/cic_text/fed_prog/ssundben/ssundben.pdf). It's kind of like talking with someone about cars, but all that they care about is how fast it goes.

So what do you think it would cost for a private company to offer what Social Security does. Any actuaries out there who are up to the challenge?

My boyfriend lives in a different state. He has family problems, and is pretty much living with his friend at the moment. He's fifteen, almost sixteen, and wants to move here (a different state) with me.

Would it be legally possible for him to buy an apartment here, by himself? At only fifteen/sixteen years old? And would it also be possible for him to get a loan at his age? (If his mother could possibly sign for it or something?)

It sounds really young, but he's been through a lot and is way more mature than most eighteen year olds. He's pretty much by himself. His dad's in jail, and his mom doesn't pay any attention to him, and she lives with her boyfriend, and might be going to jail also.

I'm not in the computer system yet though so I'm wondering if I'll get paid this Friday or if I'll have to wait another two weeks?

-Also, when you're paid bi-weekly are you paid for 1 or 2 weeks at a time?-

My husband and I are looking forward buying our first house. We are teachers and know that there is a program offered by some banks for first time buyers and/or teachers. Do we need a realtor that represent us in the process of buying? Will the realtor help us negotiate the price and do we need to pay him or her from our pocket? How much money do we need for closing costs, moving and other expenses? How much is an inspector? Thank you for the extra-info.

My wife went in to have a hospital test done. I asked them up front how much it would cost and even though it was a standard procedure they couldn't tell me. They wanted me to just pay a little and I said I wanted to pay it all up front, so I wrote them a check for $400. A month later I got a check because I overpayed about $30. Then 2 months later I got another check for around the same amount. I had pretty much forgotten about the first check by then and didn't think anything of it. Now about 4 months later they call me saying I OWE them $30. First off I don't owe anything. I paid up front and it was their accounting mistake that was the problem, but they are trying to blame me saying they'll put it on my wife's credit report and tried to accuse us of calling them to have a duplicate check written. I don't mind paying any bill that I owe but the fact that they are being accusing and I have to pick up the slack for their mistake and also I ultimately lose out if I don't pay

So I started a new full time salaried job about 2.5 months ago. I just received my first OT check (worked 30 hours of OT). Federal taxed me for 24.99% of my gross. State taxed me 8.83% of my gross. The state tax amount taken from this check alone amounts for 26.89% of my YTD withheld. Fed Tax from this check is 21.63% of my YTD withheld. Yet my OASDI and Medicare deductions are in line with the rest of my checks.

Upon calling payroll to try to understand what has happened, I am told that they calculate my tax bracket monthly and assume I make that much each month. Payroll says my tax bracket probably went up which is why it is so much higher. When I asked how one or two tax brackets changes my percent federal taken from 14.3% to 25%, they said they retro-tax me for checks I have already been payed in that month.

How is this legal? And why is my tax bracket figured monthly instead of quarterly or bi-anually? "It's in my best interest" is not an answer I'm happy with.

After trying to find ways to be able to take care of our responsibilities we have come to the last resort and that is to file bankruptcy. We don't own any homes or any real property. what I am curious about is which is better chapter 7 or chapter 13. We want to be able to start saving a soon as it done and when feesible start rebuilding credit. Our credit card debt is only $1200 which is a lot, but it could be worse. We just had two bad years with this one being the worse. I am looking for advice on the best way to go between the two. Chapter 7 or Chapter 13 and why.

We are not happy about doing this as we have tried everything. We don't have anything of value and we have tried to pawn stuff but couldn't get $25.00 for most. We live very modestly. So please do not answer this question if you are going to be negative.

Thank you so much. We want to do the right thing so we can start over and never have to do this again.
