You should call your landlord before sending the letter. Some places want you to just fill out their "30 day move out notice". There is also a place for your forwarding address on the notice you fill out. You must give them your forwarding address within 4 days after you move to get your deposit returned also.

At that time the landlord should tell you or give you a list of what is expected to get your security deposit returned to you.

You want to notify all the utilities that were in your name also. Including phone, cable, & internet service. Fill out a forwarding mail card for the post office.

No, there's no specific way.

Dear Sir,

I have purchased a house and plan to move out of Apartment 6J by December 31, 2007. This is my official notice to you of my intent to move. Thank you very much.

Sincerely,

David

First off...I just have to ask, seeing as my mother is a landlord...are you giving the required 30 days notice? That's a big factor in how you write your letter.

Whoever gave me the thumbs down...you are REQUIRED to give thirty days notice. If you don't, you need to come up with a legit reason about why you could not give full notice.
