I kind of get the idea regarding escrow. If I make a 10% deposit, I asked or have it detailed in the contract that the deposit will go into escrow until the final construction punch list has been completed. Am I right or wrong.

My mom in Mississippi, who is 73, lives on Social Security, receives Medicare, and is unemployed, just sold her house. She invested the larger part of her money ($70,000) in a CD, and a small amount ($10,000) in a Money Market. It was her first home sale, she has no other money or property and is now living in a one bedroom apt. My question is at her age and income and tax bracket will she have to pay any taxes on the money she made from the sale of her home and/or will she be taxed in any way on the money she now has in her two types of savings accounts?

Can any one help me efficiently set up and profitably operate a group of restaurants, one at a time.

I have got this opportunity of life time; which i might loose; if i do not prepare and submit a detailed plan and if i fail to negotiate my terms rightly.

I am not very clear about the steps and methods required for doing so and about the nitty gritty involved there in for making my offer result oriented.

I am starting a new job in a few weeks. I work for a place that has "sites" all over the county. I was assigned a placement that is VERY far from my house. I know from other people who work there that other positions will be opening up that are closer to my home. How should I ask my boss to switch placements without sounding like a complainer?

The IRS only allows $3000 in childcare credit. I don't know anyone who pays only $250 a month in childcare. An average estimate for my area is about $8400 a year for a certified daycre center. Where does the IRS come up with these figures? I am going to move there and enroll my kids in THAT daycare!

Hello,
I'm an American living in Japan with a Japanese YEN salary and the YEN is at an all time low against the dollar right now, which is raising a lot of concern. When I came in April, 2005, the yen was 105/dollar. Now, it's 123/dollar, which means 17 to 19% of my earnings are... gone. (I haven't converted/transferred any of my money yet.)

Obviously no one can answer questions about whether the yen will get stronger or not; Rather, I'm looking for suggestions on what to do with my money. I've read in a few places that the Japanese economy (even though stocks are at a record high right now) is still worthwhile to invest in since it's expected to be on the rise (a bull economy) until 2010 or so.

As an American living in Japan with a Japanese YEN salary, what is the best thing to do?
1) Wait and do nothing & hope for the YEN to get stronger.
2) Invest in Japanese stock
3) Invest in American (or other) stock
4) Other

Ideas?

The dryer was making a horrid metal-against-metal squeak from the get-go, which I mentioned to the agent -- the appliances were included and supposed to be functional -- noting that it wouldn't last very long. It lasted about a month.

It did dry clothes for that month, just not well or quietly.

Is it worth pursuing, or are we just stuck buying a new dryer?

I got another late offer from another company with an overall package that is worth 14K more this year and 11K the following year(s). Is it common for people to renegotiate an offer letter based on these circumstances? I am completely torn as I want the job that I have already agreed to, but at the same time feel that 14K/11K is a lot to leave on the table…PLEASE HELP!!

This a kinda stupid question I guess, but not sure about it.
I was in a wreck last year and was not at fault. I paid the $500 insurance deductible out-of-pocket to pick up my car from the body shop. I have yet to receive this money from my insurance company. Question: When I do receive this money will I have to claim it as income at tax time because we are in a different calendar year? Does it matter that I paid it out-of-pocket, therefore, IMO, it isn't really income?
