The dryer was making a horrid metal-against-metal squeak from the get-go, which I mentioned to the agent -- the appliances were included and supposed to be functional -- noting that it wouldn't last very long. It lasted about a month.

It did dry clothes for that month, just not well or quietly.

Is it worth pursuing, or are we just stuck buying a new dryer?

I had no idea the dryer was crap until I moved in; they were presented as working appliances.

(The dishwasher was just out-and-out broken; we're still working on dealing with that...)

Sounds like you are probably stuck buying a new one.

Unless you received some sort of warranty or promise when you closed, the dryer became your problem before the ink was dry on the contracts. Given that you were aware that there was a potential issue with the dryer simply reinforces that situation.

Your sellers should have purchased a warrenty for your applicances as part of the closing cost. I am pretty sure it is required in CA, and I would assume everywhere. It covers them if something breaks, so you can't claim non-disclosure against them. The warrenties last a year.

Call the real estate agent you bought from, he/she should have the numbers handy that you need to call to get the appliances repaired or replaced.

Things like this happen all of the time, he/she will be used to it.

Unless there was a home warranty purchased that covers appliances, or there is a warranty on the dryer that transfers to a new owner, you will have to either fix that dryer or buy a new one.

(I had a horrible squeak in my dryer, it cost about $100 to fix, and its been tumbling along for about a year)

You're stuck buying a new dryer. The only good thing is that it will probably be more energy efficient.

Sounds like at the time you closed you were aware of the condition of these appliances. Caveat emptor. If nothing was presented to you as other than what it was I don't think you have much recourse.

You should have gotten at least a one year warranty on everything. Call your Realtor!
