I am starting a new job in a few weeks. I work for a place that has "sites" all over the county. I was assigned a placement that is VERY far from my house. I know from other people who work there that other positions will be opening up that are closer to my home. How should I ask my boss to switch placements without sounding like a complainer?

Hello, Lady J. I think, of course you can ask. It can't hurt to ask, can it? If there is someone closer to that site that they could place there, it seems like they should do it. I would ask, in a friendly way, and I would simply say that it is so far from your home that you were hoping for a closer placement. As long as you are just asking, and not making threats (which I'm SURE you wouldn't do!), it seems like no harm could come from it. The worst that can happen is they tell you 'no' and you gut it out for a while. As long as you don't complain you should sound just fine. It's a perfectly reasonable request as long as asked in a reasonable way. Good luck, I hope you get placed where you want to be!

The only thing you can do is be honest and let him/her know how you feel. Bosses' like honesty in a person. Tell them you would rather stay close to home. Work away for the time he gave you and tell him when this opening comes up you would like to have it.

Let your boss and the hr department know about your wanting to relocate. Tell them why(maybe the cost of travel, etc.) you'd like to move. Be honest with them.

You better go straight to boss as well as HRD they will understand your requirement. They will accommodate you positively if they can.
