A friend of mine and I were discussing how despite great press, his theater company is having a difficult time getting people in the seats. They have won awards from the LA Drama Critics Circle and receive great reviews in all the major local papers. I don't really want to say much more about the company because I just want intuitve answers. We have our theories, but I'm just curious, what gets YOU to decide to go see a specific play?

FOR BLACKS ONLY (Some question about Tyler Perry PLAYS?)?
I think that I have got to be one of the only African American who thinks Tyler Perry's plays are POORLY WRITTEN PIECES OF ..(DO-DO)! There are a few "feel good" scenes which are (typically) mostly church scenes! However, his stereotypes of women as either overly weak, (the victim character) or overbearing (his Medea character) are OVER THE TOP!! His males are depicted as either "so damn nice and sweet" that they are not real men or they are just THE DEVIL (the villians). Another problem is that most of his plays STEAL from other plays. (The Color Purple, Roots, & Beloved)

Unlike his screen plays, the music in his stage plays are ussually irrelevant to the plot and what is worse he OFTEN breaks character to talk to the audience.

TYLER PERRY'S PLAYS ARE NOT LEGIT BLACK THEATRE

REASONS:
1. There is no subtlity to his characters.
2. The message & themes of the play are ussually on the surface there are no secondary or subplots.
3. They depend heavily on stereotypes.

4. Most of his Morality plays PREACH TO HARD, they do not leave the audience with much to think about or ponder on!

5. Many of his plays steal to much from other plays, his works do not stand on it's own.

6. Tylar doesn't seem to have an "honest" grasp of the human condition.

7. He also depends to heavily on LOW-BROW humor....Fart Jokes, silly wise cracks about shooting someone, snatching weaves and etc.

KoKo, I understand that a play most have some type of conflict and in plays that have a "man vs. man" conflict there most be a good and a bad guy! However, in most sopisticated DRAMA's (which his plays ussually are) the characters are more "well-rounded" most of the characters are not PURELY GOOD or PURELY EVIL! They are mostly right or left of the center

I'm interested in joining a theatre performing group. How can I be able to know which group to join, or can you help me find a group performing in a theatre here in the Philippines? We already have quite a few skits in the production... I'm looking for ideas that are either from a musical (but can't buy dvd so need to know where to get the song and ideas for how to put it on stage) or maybe something a bit more serious that makes people think- and possibly a skit to a popular song or a good oldie... Any ideas will help- maybe even shoot off some ideas in my head...

17 year old returns to school after a previous year of a bad reputatuion and being bullied and deals with problems as a junior i high school. He meets a girl who is a senior and 2
years older than Him and she helps him develop and they fall in love untill he abandons her for friends he thinks are true but is only a set up to be embarred him at Junior prom. He is betrayed and reunites later with the girl and attends Senior prom where he says something to offend her and she runs out and so does he. They both talk and they confess they love each other an movie ends with a big Kiss scene. He is shy, abusive and keeps people in relationships by force and is not very social and he is Black. She is white, rebellious and is opposite of him.
short version so it is not very detailed.
Is this a good Plot for my movie?
What should thier names Be and why?
Should i include sex and some violence?

I know it just about every girls dream to be a model. when i was 13, i went to a modeling school (Barbizon) and went to a modeling/acting competition in NY. I decided to not work as a model/actress because i felt too young. I wanted my chance to be a kid. so i held it off. now i am 16, and i feel ready for a job. i dont want to go with an agency, bc they didnt seem to help at all and they were..well, jerks. i just want to get local jobs (in or near Ohio), but i dont know how to get started! my dad's friend does modeling on the side, so she agreed to help me by sending some pics and my resume around, but i feel that's at the bottom of her "to do" list. Do u have any ideals on what i can do? i tried looking up jobs on the internet, but everything is for 18+ or in LA. I dont wanna be famous, i just wanna do what i love.
