From what I've heard, the auditions for SNL really put you on the spot. You have to have at least a handful of characters at the ready and know them inside and out so they can throw situations at you and you can deal with them right then and there AND make them funny. Impressions that you can do really well and make whole skits out of and characters that they can build skits from are obviously ideal.

You have to be phenomenally funny on your own, but you also have to be able to tone yourself down and let someone else shine. You have to be a team player. Know when to shine and when to blend. Be humble and fun to be around, not overbearing :-)

Good luck!

A lot of the folks on SNL happen to have started out on Second City or the Groundlings. But as they will be sure to tell you, they don't have a "pipeline" to SNL. I can tell you that Groundlings is a great place to train, though.

I think you're looking at it the wrong way 'round. Getting on SNL would be a career to get, not a way to get a career. You want to make a career as a comedy actor anyway, whether you get on SNL or not. It's a nice thing to hope for (haven't we all?) but don't make it your only goal.

I don't know where you are. Second City here in the fair metropolis of Chicago has it's own improvisation school, and then the best of those make it to their stage, and that has been a springboard for some to national exposure. Maybe join or form an improv group and go to the competitions, the best of those seem to go on to bigger and better things too. Good luck whatever you decide, laughter is a good thing.

Many of the people on SNL came from improv groups, especially in New York and Chicago. Look for chances to get involved with improv, and get as much exposure for your comedy career as you can. If you don't have an agent, get one.
