is my dad being unreasonable? i live with both my parents. my best friend invited me to go with her to ottawa thats only 3 hours away by drive for 3 days on new years eve. we're taking a bus there and staying in a hotel. im 18 years old turning 19 in 2 months. my mom said its okay but my dad said that bad things happen on new years eve and that i cant go. i said he could talk to her parents about the trip but he still says no. i said he could have the number for the hotel if he wants to get in contact with me but he still doubts. every year at my house on new years eve we always do the same thing..stay home and watch a movie and he says we should do the same. he says i cant even go out to a party my friend is having cuz bad things happen on new years eve. he says he trusts me but he just doesnt trust the people out there. and just the other day he said to me "why cant u grow up?".ggrrrrrr im sssoooo mad i really wanna go on the trip what do i do? advice please!

Many say no and point to the fact that animals do not have the intellect or sense of self that humans have.

However, to those that bring up these points, do you lump all animals into the same category above simply because they are not human? Remember, many animals have human qualities:

Examples:

Dolphins, elephants, parrots, chimps/gorillas/bonobos clearly have a sense of "self", which means that they are sentient, just like humans; they recognize their "selves" as individuals in a mirror and realize that is THEM, not another animal of the same species.

Chimps have recently been shown to have a greater capacity for counting and remembering numbers than do human beings.

Bonobos "make love not war" just like humans, they are the only animals who use sex to diffuse tense situations, make up after a fight, and just "have fun" without regards to mating cycles, just like humans.

Parrots not only have a sense of "self" but some also an intelligence equal to a 5 year old child; do some research on “Alex” the African Grey who was trained by Dr. Irene Pepperberg if you have any doubts or questions, he died while she was starting to teach him the alphabet and was going to move on to reading simple words such as “cat” and “hat”. Many parrots, mostly African Greys, are capable of carrying on simple conversations in HUMAN language (much as gorillas and chimps with sign language), ask for what they want or need, and say the appropriate word or phrase at the appropriate time (such as saying goodnight when the lights go out).

How can these types of animals not have a soul if you simply equate “soul” to human intelligence and knowledge of “self”?

I got a new digital camera for Christmas. What I'm finding is that the batteries are wearing down very quickly. I replaced the batteries that came with the camera with rechargable ones, but found that for the few things I did with the camera today, i.e. took a few pics, tried to learn more about the camera, I found that the batteries were at less than half again, which meant I had to put the batteries back onto the charger. Is there anything I can do to help preserve the battery life? I'm going on vacation in 2 weeks & certainly don't want to be replacing batteries every time I turn around.
My camera is a Polaroid i531 & takes 2 AA batteries.

I am doing research for a friend who's child has stage IV Neuroblastoma. He is certainly undergoing chemotherapy at this time, and will have stem cell treatment in the in the near future. Nevertheless, this type of cancer has a poor long term prognosis. I am looking into every possible treatment, without harming him in ANY way.

A guy I used to work with, used to talk to me all the time ( even if I seemed uninterested, but I was....) and would go out of his way to say hi or ask me questions ( we worked in totally different departments) about how my work was going. Do you think he was interested in me in a dating way? He never made a move or asked me out... do you think he was just being friendly? and do guys just want to talk to women even if they aren't interested in them for a girlfriend?
