There is a delay to Feb 11 for filing if you use one or more of the following forms:

• Form 8863, Education Credits.
• Form 5695, Residential Energy Credits.
• Form 1040A's Schedule 2, Child and Dependent Care Expenses for Form 1040A Filers.
• Form 8396, Mortgage Interest Credit and
• Form 8859, District of Columbia First-Time Homebuyer Credit.

Otherwise you can file by mail starting Jan 1 or efile starting Jan 14.

You can prepare your taxes whenever you have all of your info, but can't file them until the above dates.

Yes, its after Jan 1st, however because Congress was to slow to do anything this year the IRS is behind so any changes that needed to be made could not get into the forms in time, so expect a delay, and a delay in getting your refund, if you have one.

You can not do your taxes until you receive all of your paperwork such as W-2's and 1099's. These items do not have to be mailed to you until the 31st of January. In my office we do not schedule tax appointments until the first week of February to give people a chance to receive all of their information. Amended tax returns suck! Best to wait until until February so you have all of your information!

As an employee you can complete and file your 2007 tax return as soon as you have your T4 slips.
