Does it have to do with the glass, the size, the way it opens, or something else?

I'm not sure but I always refer to a window on the roof of that car that is towards the front a sunroof and the window on the roof more towards the back as the moon roof.

Why?
You do it on the back seat
When you're done "doing it" you watch the moon and the stars while getting prepped for another run. So its a moon roof. You ever try doing it across the front seats?

I have both in my SUV.
Sunroof = Entire glass slides backwards.
Moonroof = It lifts up about an inch in the back to let air in.

Pretty much the same thing.
Moonroofs don't ALWAYS open fully.
Sunroofs retract fully to the open sky.
