People used to believe that the world was flat. They thought that Earth was the centre of the universe, they assumed these things becauser they simply did not understand.
In ancient times people lacked the resources to explain the universe, so they explained through religion.
I am not saying people were any less smart, but they simply thought in a different context. To explain why humans are here, why things happen the way they do, they came up with the most logical explanation for that time:
God. Knowing nothing of science, seeing nothing of the universe it was only logical that some great being was responsible for everything.
But NOW we have science, we have SEEN what is out there. It is no longer a matter of explaining it ourselves, but finding out the facts to explain it.
I'm not saying science is all correct, but what we assume from science is taken from actual evidence. What we assume form religion is taken from our own minds, or books written long ago.
