Michael Ingram - you took the words right out of my mouth. Indian people do seem, to make a point of saying they are British and social status seems more important to them then to "British" people!
Also if India is such an economuic power why are the Indians the largest minority group in the UK. Why not stay in India and reap those economic rewards?
And since being on this site I have seen lots of Indian people in particular saying they will be the next superpower. Just go onto Yahoo India to see for yourself!

Webmann - Not really interested in India or Indians I'm afraid. They are highly discriminatory people simply look at their preoccupation with color, their caste system and the whole north -south divide in that country. One of the biggest industires in that country is skin lightening products not agriculture or transportation, so is that what you call economic progress?

I agree and I have a theory that Indians are ashamed of being Indian, they are ashamed of their own nationality. Have you not heard the Indians here in the UK calling themselves "British"?. I know Germans and Americans who have been here for 20 years and never call themselves anything other than German or American,

This is a good question here.I think you might probably know the facts here.
I am an indian citizen living in new york.
Until 1991,india followed a socialistic form of government causing enormous poverty that is reflected now.It also caused a lot of corruption in all department.
But after the opening of the economy much like what china did in 1970s,india has been able to reverse that .India has lifted 300 million people out of poverty in 10 years.thats is no mean achievement.
The main asset is the 'demographic dividend' you may google it you dont understand this.India has lot of educated working force, along with the free market would certainly argue well for the economy.
sure India has problems;me being a citizen am well aware of that let me list them for you,for I do hate india for all these reasons
1) Rigid caste system and illiteracy of rural masses
2)Narrow minded politicians
3) slow growth in hard infrastructure
4)Journalism is in its infancy here
But I am sure that in 30 odd years it will be a stronger country. As far as outsourcing is concerned i think the person who asked this question doesn't know the full aspect of outsourcing.
Few assets for india
Young working educated population by their sheer # is formidable
Even when many indians settle abroad its impact is minimal when compared to talent available. I don't want to bother you with facts, you may google it yourself and see.
No way india could boast of super power when it has poverty, caste, and human rights violations which it still has .
It might be possible in 50 years...But not right now
the economic boom has just started.....

It is good for any body to think a better future, so if indians believe like that, it is an enthusiastic thing.
Now, if other people think so, it should have a reason. The huge man-power, if deployed in a planned way, it would create a wonder. Now, with globalization in full swing, this is main motivating factor infavour of India.
Secondly, India has a large reservoir of natural resources which they are conserving rather that consuming. It is very important. I have observed young europeans, least careful about country. They are more in favour of enjoying. This may deteriorate their future generations.
Life expectancy of europeans & americans is increasing but their working life span is still the same. That means they are producing consumers & not producers or value-adders. This is a slow phenomenon but irreversible, once the habit is formed.
So, I think India, China & Japan are the super powers of tomorrow.

You should know that a country's economy is different from its power to defend or strike. India has the potential to become the superpower since it has the finest missile technology, the knowledge for using nuclear power besides having an excellent military infrastructure and intelligent manpower.
There is nothing wrong in exporting products/produces of a country or its services (BPO) to earn revenue for the country.
Please do not have any doubt about India becoming a superpower one day; neither feel bad about India's BPO work to US,UK, etc.

there are 300 million indians living in poverty, thats a lot but not half..stereotypes...If you watch cnn, fox or any other american media, thats what you would think but that is totally untrue! India is the second fastest growing economy in the world with a big time information technology and infosystems hub...The largest film and music industry in the world( all films are NOT musicals). A big fashion industry as well. The talent pool in the country is insane...a 400 million middle class and most of them know english. They have recently started to manufacture cars but that will take a while to reach international standards...Since 1947, India has continued to grow bigger and bigger. Currently it's a big time global player in the economy and its only getting bigger.

India is an awesome country with more brain power than most of us realize.
They may be living in poverty but that is slowly changing with the ways they have found to grow better foods faster.
They also have the means now to produce better and less toxic fuels along with vehicles that produce less pollution.
Over the next few years you are going to see that India is much more than people living in poverty.
The Discovery Channel and Daily Planet just had a great week long show that gives perspective to the NEW Indian people's.

I too have heard this, but after recent stays in India (for months at a time) believe me it is not going to happen for a long, long, long time yet.
Yes the vast majority of the population live in abject poverty but this isn't the reason. The reason is they just do not have the infrastructure to be able to even call themselves a unified country. Everything from roads and transport links to telecommunications are mare minimal at best, and whilst this is changing, it is far too slow for India to make any real progress in the near future.

I don't like there "caste" system or they're double standards.
I don't like there ways of using young children as abject slaves.
If they think this of there own people what do they think of the rest of the world, what would they do with a nuclear bomb had they the way to send it, with all these thoughts of serfdom.
I also think Pakistan would be in a lot of trouble had they the way to transport a bomb.
