Check this article for setting up the server.
http://www.onecomputerguy.com/networking/xp_vpn_server.htm

You then just add a "network connection" on the client
Just go to network connections and "create a new connection:. Then select "connect to a network at my office (VPN)" fill it out and use the IP of the "server" you now have a VPN.

You should be sure both computers have all the updates there was an issue with MS VPN software.

Good Luck.

NB If the VPN is over the internet and you have Routers in front of the PCs then you need to allow the traffic in to your machine. if PPTP VPN (which is microsoft supported) this means both the PPTP control TCP1724 i think and the GRE protocol is required.

GRE is an IP protocol not a TCP/UDP protocol some routers only forward TCP and UDP.

Then the easy past just configure VPN gateway on one machine (Do not know if supported on XP) this is the routing and something service on windows 2000 and then set up the VPN client.

VNC will not allow you to play internet games over the internet.

Another way is (if supported on your router) set up a VPN gateway on the router itself. Then your mate can VPN to the gateway and bingo he is in your network.

Use the free version. It will be like you are in the same building.

If you want to VNC use LogMeIn Free. You can use it to take control of another computer, like to work on the system. If your friend needed help you could log on like you were in front of his computer. I use it to help my mom, sis, and brother,
