As most of you know, I have a 3 year old. We do time-outs most of the time, but sometimes she gets a swat to the butt and I'm not afraid to say it. My parents spanked me when I was a kid and I grew up fine. Dr. Spock says spanking was ineffective and cruel, and his son committed suicide with a drug overdose. You do the math.
People, especially those that don't have kids, are often very quick to judge a person's parenting based on how their kid behaves in public. My three year old is usually very well behaved, but as with any kid, we get the occassional temper tantrum. If I were to spank her in public, however, that would draw fire as well. It's not like I can take her somewhere at the store and put her in time out, and if I'm at the store I'm getting what I need. Forget leaving without it, that's exactly what she wants me to do, and we know you don't want her crying..

How do those of you that oppose spanking and oppose kids misbehaving in public suggest we deal with the problem?

I am just wondering, for atheists, if you were planning to marry, say, say a Catholic, would you convert to Catholicism for your potential spouse. Obviously you aren't going to believe it whole-heartedly, but would you make that sacrifice in order to discharge potential religious drama in your marriage.

I guess essentially, it's like playing dress-up, pretending, but would you be willing to do this. Or would you at least participate in their practice of religion, such as going to church with them. This is a hypothetical, like if you happen to fall in love with a religious person. If yes, explain. If not, explain.

I have a delightful 18mth old girl. The only problem is she bites. If I take something from her / stop her doing something, she is likely to bite me. If she is frustrated she is likely to bite me. And sometimes when she appears happy and calm, she may bite. Occassionally, she will bite other children, apparently for no reason.
I know that all children at some stage bite, but it seems that she bites more than most, and has been doing so for over 3 months. It is also strange that she bites me (her father) but not her mother, grandparents etc.
I've tried a lot of things to stop her. I've removed her from the situation, got onto her eye level and told her no biting. I've shouted at her (and then felt very bad). I've ignored it (painful). I remove my arm / hand / finger / neck / cheek when I se her moving in for the bite.
None of the above strategies have worked.
Any ideas?

Majority of the "gulaman" brands I saw in the supermarket had carrageenan as their main ingredient. I need agar or kanten. Are the long, cellophane plastic-like blocks commonly sold along the boxed gelatin products agar?

And where can I buy agar?

My son is 6 years old and is very mature for his age. He has held down a part time job for almost 2 years and is very good at saving up his money. He is very interested in getting a tattoo of sponge bob on his wrist. He has saved up the money and knows the risks of getting a tattoo. My husband and I both agree that he is old enough and responsible enough to make his own decisions. Some of my family thinks that he is too young to do this but I disagree. Why shouldn't I let my 6 year old son get a tattoo??

OK, I have a very good friend in Iraq right now. Very Irish, and a huge fan of Guinness. St. Patrick's Day is like a religious holiday for him. A group of us want to send him a care package for St. Patty's. We can't send him a pint of anything, but thought it would be fun to send him beer related items. Other than Beer Nuts, what would you suggest?

I have been with my girlfriend for about a year and a half we are both very in love with each other . We are both in our forties . To make a long story short she had a brief fling with her sons married football coach about 4 months before I met her. My girlfriend was getting out of an ugly marriage then . After we have been dating for maybe a month she told me about the relationship and that the coach was still calling her trying to continue the relationship . I told her that she needed to make a decision and that she would have to choose me or him she said that she told me because she wanted him to leave her alone . She immediately called and told him she no longer wanted to have any contact with him because she had met somebody . The calls stopped and she said that if the calls would begin she would let me know and we can deal with it . No calls since and he was not coaching last season but I occasionally obsess that he will show up next season and try to hook up should I worry ?
