"Best" is always subjective. Some say George Carlin, others say Richard Pryor and is Mort Sahl (a comic from the 50s and 60s) just as funny today as he was then?

Redd Foxx was really funny, Sandford and Son is still hilarious. But I also like Robin Williams and Steve Martin, both excellent comedians in their prime.
-Monty Python is also notable as is Carlos Menica.
There are way too many comedians to choose from because everyone's sense of humor is different.

Of today's comics, my favorite Eddie Izzard. He has a great sense of timing, and is extremely smart and well educated. He has a very monty pythonesque comedy style, where it's more of a stream of conscious just rolling off his tongue rather than any sort of staged and rehearsed sort of comedic style. He has very funny material and very "worldly" I guess you'd say because he has performed in, not only the UK, but also in the US and France. But just to let you know, Y answers treats the sort of questions as phishing for points so don't be surprised if you get a wrist slap from them for this sort of question type.

I know alot of people are going to name comics like Richard Pryor, Eddie Murphy, Dane Cook, Chris Rock, etc. I do admit I like Chris and Eddie more now than before, and that is because if you compare their earlier material to newer stuff it is not as vulgar.
I personally think a real comic is one who can get their point across and make you laugh without the "shock factor".
I still laugh at Dangerfield, Cosby, and the dry humor of Newhart.
