How do people find a place to get away to on a cheap budget ?

I'm starting a new job in Orlando and thus have to relocate. I don't want to live somewhere where everything screams Disney. Instead I'd love to move to a nice suburban area with low crime rates, good schools and with all the essentials (shopping etc) close by. Any recommendations? Please explain in your answer why you picked a specific place. Thank you very much!

The only state I've never traveled through is North Dakota. Is that common or uncommon? I'd like to go there, but it seems out of the way. What's a good reason to go there?

We are visiting San Fran with our 2 kids (8 and 11) just after Christmas. We will be renting a car and driving south to LA at the end of the trip. Should we invest more time in driving north to see Point Reyes National Seashore or should we skip it and concentrate on Big Sur?
