We are visiting San Fran with our 2 kids (8 and 11) just after Christmas. We will be renting a car and driving south to LA at the end of the trip. Should we invest more time in driving north to see Point Reyes National Seashore or should we skip it and concentrate on Big Sur?

Thanks so much for the information! We live in Atlanta (home to another great aquarium) but I think we'll visit the one in Monterey too!!! I hear Big Sur is awesome and I can't wait. The trip is a Christmas gift to the kids.

The wind coming off Pacific is going to be cold in December, you may take the kids to Pt. Reyes and they may want to get back in the car.
Go for Big Sur . The aquarium at Monterey is amazing and worth the visit. If you do drive down the PCH to LA make sure that you top off in Monterey or Carmel since gas on the highway is very expensive.
Have fun -dress warm

I would skip Point Reyes and go to Big Sur. Big Sur is close to Monterrey, which is a great place for kids due to the fact they have the best aquarium in the world. Point Reyes is nice, but not the greatest of places for kids.

Point Reyes is very open and rugged. It has a nice lighthouse but is cold almost year round. The stairs to the lighthouse are quite a workout as well. Big Sur is coastal redwoods and very pretty.

Big Sur is awsome and I agree with the Montery aquarium. There are also a lot of things to see along US 1

Big Sur is quite spectacular and my recommendation. Check out Lucia Lodge while on the drive. See below:
