OMG, stay away from the Castro on Halloween. Cops are everywhere. There are thousands of people, half which are in trashy costumes, the other half which are trashing your costume.
For amazing events in the Castro, go to the Pink Party or Castro Street Fair. At least for those, you can drink safely.
Halloween is a very festive night. No matter where you go in SF, people will be in party mode. Last year, I was in North Beach for Halloween. We had a blast. It was less crowded then the Castro and way more safe.
Halloween events include...
The DNA Lounge Halloween Extravaganza
Main Room:
The musical stylings of Rosin Coven
The vaudeville stylings of Creepshow Peepshow
Living Dead Girlz
And many others
Captured By Robots @ Bottom Of The Hill
The Bouncing Souls @ Slim's
The Cramps and The Groovie Ghoulies @ The Fillmore
Tricky @ The Independent
Sound Tribe Sector 9 @ Warfield Theatre
On Oct. 28th
LIVE 105's Halloween Freakout

Halloween is San Francisco's Mardi Gras. It is very adult and very crowded. Get to the Castro early and be ready to see things you will never see again.
For the more traditional stuff you need to head out to the suburbs. If you have kids, try Six flags Marine World. They have been getting better every year. Nice rides and a good haunted house.

Castro is the big event. Be careful, though. If you get there and want to leave, there can be a problem. Muni (the trains) were overwhelmed and shut down last year. Taxis couldn't get anywhere near the Castro district, and even if they could, there were a million people looking for taxis. I forgot it was Halloween last year and took the train to Castro for some pizza. BIG MISTAKE!!! I ended up walking 5 miles over the biggest hill in SF in order to get home. I suggest staying at home and throwing water balloons at the trick-or-treators.

as someone who lives here i san fran. the locals STAY AWAY FROM THE CASTRO EVEN THE PEOPLE WHO LIVE THERE.
the castro each year has gotten worse to the point where they now block it off.
anyway. if you want to try something not so crowded try the san francisco ghost tours. if you do a quick search it will come up right away. it takes you around the city (walking i believe) to san fran's most haunted places. its pretty cool

Go to the Castro district, where you'll see incredible costumes and crazy people! It's very crowded, but it's a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
