I'm heading off to Japan in a few weeks, I already know the exchange rates. I heard Japan is expensive and was wondering what can one US dollar buy over there.

We have looked at a couple--QC Sports Club had facilities that were too dated and Celebrity Sports Club seemed a little pricey (according to their site, 30 mo is 395,000 plus monthly). Are there any others? We are looking for gym equipment, badminton courts, and classes (pilates) especially.

Why is OK for foreign distance runners to compete for Japanese high school track clubs, but yet as far as I know you have to be Japanese to play HS baseball? If a Kenyan kid can run in the Hakone Ekiden, shouldn't a kid from the Dominican Republic be allowed to pitch at Koshien? I'm just asking for consistency from sport to sport.

It looks like the start of the rainy season, so does this mean it will rain constantly or just once a day for half an hour like in other tropical places such as Caribean?

Hello. I'm doing research on street gangs in Japan that aren't Yakuza-related. What famous biker-gangs come from Japan besides the "Black Emporers"? Please let me know. Thank you. :D

I'm going to japan this summer and spending about a week with a host family in Iwateken (specificaly Kitakami). I was wondering what there is to do in Iwate as far as sightseeing, tourist attractions, and other attention drawing things.

Also does anyone have any tips about Iwate or Japan in general? Anything would be helpful. Including what to bring as omiage for my host family and some do's and don'ts.

Thank you.

Why are there so many young women interested in hostessing? I mean, what's so attractive about been treated like a slave? is it money, an unloving family?. Why would a modern woman want to degrade herself?. Doesn't make any sense to me..could anyone explain this to me? thanx in advance.

in a country where you absolutely don't know anyone, but know the language used? You have enough funds to get to that place, but once you are there, you would immediately have to look for work. I'm interested to know as I am about to take the biggest risk of doing just that and hopefully a net will appear as I take that leap. In addition, I have no more family here (no more parents & am an only child) basically, I'm out on my own, have my friends but they also have their own families already (we rarely see each other). There's really nothing much more here for me, that's why I'm free to move around. I've just turned 30 and I just believe that a person can only prepare so much and then you'd just have to jump in even if you don't know what's out there. Last yr I tried to travel on my own also to places where I didn't know anyone. Thank God I survived! I've studied the country where I want to go to next. I'm heading to Europe definitely where the grass is much greener.

I've been accepted into a program to teach in Japan for a year. I am curious to know how realistic is it to find a Catholic Church in Japan? I am a devoted Catholic and while I really want to teach in Japan and immmerse myself in the culture, I can't see myself not being involved in church ministry for a year. Any info or advice would be appreciated.
