Two others mentioned Yahoo Japan's nation wide info page
but there seems to be inconsistency if you look into the
info for Tokyo area

For most places you see 葉桜 or this sign

this meens trees now only have leaves and no flowers.
You'll probably have to take Tohoku Shinkansen to go
further north if want to see cherry blossams

It is almost difficult to see cherry blossoms in Tokyo. According to Yahoo.co.jp, the only place you may see is Shinjukugyoen. Take the Marunouchi Line Metro to Shinjukugyoenmae Station.

Sorry but they're a done deal but the late-blooming Yae-Sakura can still be seen. This is a thickpetaled blossom with green leaves at it's base. The more abundant somei-yoshino blossoms have all fallen.

The Yae-Sakura is scattered about and is more solitary. A good place to go though is Shinjuku Gyoen Park to see them.

Yes there are. Forget about finding any in Tokyo though. Even into early May you'll still see some up north.

But you may find another kind of Cherry blossoms (Yae Zakura). http://www.city.narita.chiba.jp/DAT/LIB/WEB/1/3_5.jpg

But for Japanese, Sakura in April means the first one, Somei Yoshino .

reading in Nara eh? it truly is unlikely to confirm cherry blossom on the plains of Nara at that factor of twelve months. i might advise Yoshino as its placed extreme up in mountains which makes it chilly sufficient for sakura to bloom later than whilst it prospers else the place. inspite of each little thing Yoshino is a sought after spot for cherry blossom. yet, besides the fact that if there is not sakura, you will truly appreciate the captivating atmosphere of Yoshino.
