.I am surprise of some of the answers here from Thai people who do not know the history of Thailand. Siam adopted the name Thailand in 1939. Currently there is an effect to have the name changes back to Siam.

Field Marshall Praek Pibulsongkram, Siam Prime Minister had changed the name from Siam to Thailand after World War II. The change intended to make the country's name inline with European countries (England, Finland, Scotland, etc.) and wanted to let it known to foreigners that it's a land of the free. (thai means free or freedom)

In the old days, it was the foreigners who gave the name of Siam to this region, following the native tribes who resided here. Therefore it was never an official name till the Thais decided to make it official to name the country after themselves. You can read about this in the following link:

This will explain to you the name change and why the present Govt plan to rename it back to Siam is meeting very stiff resistance.

Siam meant something like: Siem Reap means :Siam Defeated". Thailand means "land of the free". The Thai people wanted a more modern invigorating name and so they changed the name

Along time ago, it was called Thailand to bring into line with a more western ideal, King Mongkut loved western political models and wanted everything to modernised. so like England, Finland etc etc, a unified state wopuld be called after it's majority people.

And after the thick as hell yanks got their heads kicked in, as usual, they wanted to forget the place was real, but instead is in la la land, a place they destroyed, God Bless America!
