I've been accepted into a program to teach in Japan for a year. I am curious to know how realistic is it to find a Catholic Church in Japan? I am a devoted Catholic and while I really want to teach in Japan and immmerse myself in the culture, I can't see myself not being involved in church ministry for a year. Any info or advice would be appreciated.

Not a problem, but it would depends on the location..I had traveled one hour by train to reach the church.. but it worth. There are many Catholic churches, check the listings on magazines that are distributed in Tokyo or google.
I do understand your situation about your strong faith and having relationship with the Lord wherever you are and I used to work with other foreigners before who were new in Tokyo and let them know where churches were.

Catholic churches are not as difficult to find as you might think. It depends on where you go, of course, but even many small towns have Catholic churches. I stayed in Tsuyama (Okayama prefecture) and there was a Catholic church there, despite the city being small.

This website lists all of the diocese and bishops that preside over them. It also lists contact information. If you know the city that you are staying in, you can contact someone and ask where the Catholic churches are:

(or, you could post the city here, and we could try to locate a church)

There are probably at least one catholic English mass accessible from any city you'd live in.
In particular, Nagasaki has the longest history of catholics (over 400 years), and cities like Tokyo, Yokohama and Kobe where there are a lot of expats have several English mass of various christian sects as well as a variety of catholic churches small and large

Click on the following link to see where the Dioceses's are located.

There are many catholic churches, if you live in a big city, just need to ask where is the nearest one. If you work in a small town, however, you may have to drive an hour or so to a bigger city every Sunday.
Wish you luck about this!

The Catholic church has been in Japan since 1543.

There are currently over one million Catholics in Japan with 16 dioceses and hundreds of parish churches.

Here is the website for the Catholic bishops' Conference of Japan: http://www.cbcj.catholic.jp/eng/index.htm

With love in Christ.

I went to a Catholic kindergarten in Japan...so I guess there are Catholic Churches in Japan. However, Japanese are not very religious people. Being religious is not considered good...it is almost considered as being in a cult.
