First, I am not talking about against bears, etc. I am talking about the .22 for personal defense against another person.

Everyone says that .22LR is worthless for self-defense, will just tick your attacker off, etc. I've heard it all. Yet, the .22 causes more homicides each year than any other caliber. Yet again today I pick-up a newspaper and a man in the city was gunned down with a .22 pistol. He was shot 3 times with a .22 and was pronounced dead when the paramedics arrived. All you have to do is pick-up any newspaper to realize that the .22 is deadly and has pretty decent stopping power. Shooting after shooting is committed with the .22 Small caliber handguns are responsible for alot of deaths each year. Everyone bashes it and says it is too small, too wimpy, etc but the crime statistics prove otherwise. Why does everyone say it is useless for self-defense when it clearly is not?

Would be my first rifle. Bolt action, synthetic stock w/scope. The price is right, I've heard they are very accurate but with no frills. Will be using it for deer and moose, possibly at long range since I will be hunting in a lot of big clear-cuts.

Any other suggestions?

From my limited understanding of the operation of the M16 rifle, the combustion gases travel through the front sight (transitioning from the barrel to the gas tube). It seems that under heavy fire situations, this would cause the front sight to heat up. Does anyone have any experience with this?

I come from a country where to get a hand gun you need to be a member of a club and you must abide my a swag of rules including not being aloud to shoot it unless you are at a registered range. Just to own guns you have to have an interview with a safety officer, you get your record checked and have to sit a seminar and a test. then you have to prove you have a safe storage system. you also need a licence to buy ammo.

Even a military style weapon with a folding stock or a mag over 10 shots is a special class

I am interested in knowing how easy it is to buy a gun in USA - what you have to do to get one. - what legal requirements are involved in storing them - can you carry them in public - and why those that have them feel they need them as they aren't good for hunting.

I am not slamming your gun laws, just interested in your thoughts Thanks heaps

I had been really interested in the Saiga rifles lately. I have been reading many articles and reviews about all the versions of the Saiga rifle. But as I read those reviews, many of them have a higher scores for the 7.62x39 version (is 8.9 out of 10) and the .223 Rem version got a lower score (6.7 out of 10). Is there really a difference between those 2 versions? I really want to get a .223 version, but the reviews scared me. Any answers are appreciated.
