The S&W M10 is probably the most poular and most produced .38 special caliber revolver ever made.
W.W.D is right it was once THE standard police sidearm in the U.S and abroad.
The M10 was made in wide variety of barrel lengths, both with full underlgs and without.
It is the quintessential american police revolver, the NYPD issued them well into the 1990s.
Not bad for a sidearm first made in 1899
If you can find a good used model for a fair price I would not hesitate to buy this gun for personal protection or recreational shooting.
If you want a new one Smith still offers the Model 10 with a 4" barrel or consider the Model 64 it's a stainless steel version available with either a 3" or 4" tube.
If your looking for a solid first handgun, a reliable defensive weapon, or just a fun, collectible, historical revolver the S&W M10 is hard to beat.

It is a decent, utilitarian revolver chambered for the .38 Special round. Yes, for many years it was consider the 'police revolver.' What was bad was not the revolver itself, but the .38 Special 158 grain lead bullet policemen were 'forced' to carry by bureaucrats that had never even fired a gun. This round is so inefficient as a man stopper that it was called the 'widow-maker' because it was likely to make a widow out of the officer's wife. If you buy this model be sure and get good defensive ammo like some non +P hollow points from Federal, Gold Dot or the Winchester Silvertips.
Good luck.

S&W model 10 is my favorite revolver in .38 special I have one as a home defense gun, carry gun,and car gun. I have a S&W model 1905 M&P in Nickel finish with a 4 inch barrel that is very similar to a model 10 only difference is the barrel is pinned and its an older gun that was made in the 1940's or early 50's before the model 10 was officially introduced so technically its a pre-model 10 which I have and its just as good and reliable. Keep the Model 10 its worth it in the long run and will be a reliable allie to you when you need it.

This is one of S+W bread and butter guns. It has been around since ( in one form or another)the late nineteenth century. It was the basis for most all of their K frame guns and has had many sub models, finishes barrel lengths etc. When I started on the Police department, this was the standard gun until young punks like me started getting .357 magnums in model 19. However, that was 32 years ago.
You'll do fine with a Model 10 unless you want tot step up the power to a .357 or more.
Chevy had a bread and butter engine that ended up being the basis for most of their cars also. It was called a 216 engine, later 283 and so on. Still was the same basic engine.

You won't be alone. Once upon a time the vast majority of policemen in the US carried it or something very close as their duty weapon. It's a little bit of history, and that doesn't happen without good cause.
