Measure between the screw holes on the bottom of the rifle.

Long action is 7 3/8"....short action is 6 1/2".

And to the naysayers, the 700 and the Winchester 70 were once quite popular with the chamber adapter users. A .30-06 with a .308 adapter in a bolt action is an easy way to get the best of both worlds.

I have no idea if the asker is talking about using one of those old adapters, but they do work and they work well....and they are far from rare.

Also, there are quite a few long action .308's to be had these days. The Remington 700 M24 rifle and its clones are long action .308's.

The .308 is a short action and the .30-06 is a long action. When in doubt compare the shell length to the .308 which is standard short action.

If it's a .308, it's a short action. It it's a .30-06, it's a long action. If you feel the need to verify this, go to remington.com and look at their rifles. Somewhere, it'll show the calibers available in their short action, and the cals. available in the long action.

Please leave my 10 points on the way out.

It can NOT be both a .308 and a 30/06! Two totally different cartridges that are not interchangable.

If the side of the barrel says ".308", it is a short action. If it says "30/06", it is a long action

It's a short action if it's a 308.
It's a long action if it's a 30-06.
It's a disaster in the making if you think you can shoot both cartridges from one rifle.
Please do not fire this rifle until you have somebody with expertise check out the rifle and go over things with you.
