What a loaded question!! This one will surely draw some really interesting answers. since you asked, here is an opinion you can consider then delete if you like.

In the USA, the right to keep and bear arms is explicitly spelled out. Much to many peoples chagrin. (ha ha ha) so, there is a very vocal and financially supportive group of people that want to see that continue and not be infringed. I am 10000% in this camp. If you review the history of mankind on this earth, you will find that there has never been a genocide against an ARMED populace. the first move for any would be despot is to disarm his constituency. If anyone out there can provide an exception to this, I will gladly eat those words. But, to my knowledge, no armed citizenry has ever been terrorized by their government. To wit: Nazi Germany vs Jews, Stalin vs his citizens, Mao Ze Dong vs Chinese, and recently Saddam Hussein vs the Iraqis. Also keep in mind the guys that wrote that constitution had just had a long war with a group that they felt were oppressors. And they wanted to lay the groundwork to prevent that from happening again. I think it shows tremendous foresight. But, i bet they didn't dream where modern technology would take guns.

Now, with that said, I am a smart enough person to realize that what works for the USA, is not what is best for Kiwis. or Aussies, or Malaysians, or anywhere else. A ban on certain semi automatic weapons may be acceptable in Kiwi culture. I know that the Aussies pretty much did away with private gun ownership of all kinds a few years ago. Most of the Aussies I know have indicated that they feel like this was a good thing and they have no regrets. So, they have to do what is right for them, So do New Zealanders.

I hope that is not too controversial. I hope it helped to answer your question.

Best regards to all.

I didn't realize you Kiwi's were having huge problems with legal semi-autos being used in crime. The American experience is that there are occasional crazies who make the news, but overall the problems are small, and with fully automatic weapons as well as semi-autos available throughout the world, there will be bad guys that get them, and it's best if the citizenry and authorities not be undergunned when it comes time to stop them.
An example of what I'm talking about is this: Some years ago, a couple of lunatics robbed a bank in Los Angeles, California. They had automatic weapons and body armor, and caused lots of casualties among the police. That wouldn't have happened in my little rural community, because almost every family has a hunting rifle that would have stopped the fight right away. It's best to be coldly rational when deciding on matters like this, rather than responding emotionally to unusual happenstance, and bans of any sort should be limited to those that offer a substantial and provable advantage.

Your mom is misinformed. My well-known squirrel rifle, although its manufacture ceased in 1957, is a semi-automated. The AR-15, protection rigidity looks and all, is a fave between coyote hunters, for clever fairly than elegance motives. Semi-vehicle pistols have over the years grow to be very a lot generally happening for self-protection and police utilization. and you're honestly actual: politicians on the different section want to apply meaningless words like "attack weapon" or "protection rigidity grade" to confuse people who do no longer comprehend a lot approximately firearms. additionally, you are able to factor this out: i've got shot 5 feral hogs in exceedingly a lot as many seconds, making use of an old form lever-action rifle of the form you spot in the old cowboy video clips. The weapons which would be banned under modern-day proposals do no longer shoot any speedier, hit from now on durable, or do the rest particular that's no longer finished with the aid of different, completely functional firearms, different than that a number of them are somewhat much less stressful to reload.

No. - It's a first step toward a total ban.
Semi-autos are just as safe as manual loading
repeaters, (which will be the next step in the decline).
Ask some of your Aussie neighbors how their total ban
is working out for them. (I hear reports of a rise in violent home invaisions).

Of course not.

I'm a free citizen of the United States, not a subject. The Constitution says God gives me the right to arm myself for defense, and I will exercise that right.

No.
You should be able to arm yourself as you see fit, whether for self protection or sport no government should be able to tell you what you can or cannot carry as a firearm.

Contact your representatives and express your distain for any proposal that would limit this.

Yes. Do it. That makes it easier to occupy your country as the people are unable to fight back. Hitler always disarmed the civilian populations of the countrys that Germany occupied.

I say keep your gun cocked and locked. I hear that you might be attacked by a machete wielding crankhead in NZ!

Of course NOT, you allow this to happen, and what is next? ALL GUNS, one type at a time until they are as extinct as dinosaurs, except for the tyrannical government people.
