I need a good sleeping bag that will last me a while. I'm not an avid camper or hiker but do go on occasion. I'd like to get more into it. I would like something that is fairly light-weight and managable. I'm in the southeast so i'm not looking for a negative temperature rating.

My friend is going camping and wants me to find a filter thing for water. I have looked all over the net and no luck. She got this from a fishing store in Bishop California and wants it again but we don't know the name. So it is a water filter that is maybe 6" high by 3" or so across. It is round and made of fiber the kind of thing that has folds from top to bottom. white in color with a little spout (nipple) on top that hooks to a hose. So I guess you have 2 containers one that you drop this filter in with dirty water and another on to recieve the clean water. from the hose.
I have no idea how this works but that is how I remember she explains it. She said its great and you don't have to pump. Okay!!!! I don't camp so I am probably explaining this all wrong....
So all you campers does this sound like something you know about and where we can get it from....
Thanks

I have about a pint of white gas sitting in an MSR bottle. I would really like to get rid of it as I will be moving soon. I don't have time to burn it and don't want to put it in my car. Any other options? Can I flush it down the drain, dump it on the street and let it evaporate, etc.? I would appreciate an answer from a vetted source (with URL) if possible. Thanks!

When you go camping (in the UK), do you have to go to an actual campsite, or can you just find a quiet spot of grassland and pitch your tent?

If you "can't", what are your odds of not getting caught/challeneged?

I'm 32, I love the outdoors, and not always I have company or friends to go to enjoy them, and sometimes, I like to be by myself. I told a good friend of mine I went camping by myself, he gave me a weird comment that made me think if I'm crazy or similar. Going camping by yourself, does it look like a normal thing?, would you think something bad about someone who would do it?. Please be honest, I don't think I'm involving my feelings on this question, just let me know what you think. Thanks!

Also, what are some of the best waterfalls in UP Michigan? I'm thinking of going in about a month, so they'd have to be pretty spectacular, or else they'd be dried up. :(

Any advice on which waterfalls are the best to see while camping up there would be greatly appreciated.

I'm going camping in a week or so. 4 days in a tent. I've camped before, but I've always been the type to bring a lot of cans of beef stew and stuff like that along. What are some good, varied foods I can bring to liven up the experience that won't break or make a mess, or require a lot of work?

So far, I've come up with instant oatmeal, hot dogs... and canned beef stew. :-)

Reports say anything from a 30% chance to a 50% chance of rain/isolated storms off and on basically all day.

We are only planning on going for 2 nights, and the place is less than 2 hours away.

Should we call it off, wait it out and decide later in the day tomorrow, or just go for it?

I would like to buy a floor saver/ground cover for my tent. My question is, none of them are exactly the same size as my tent. They will either be a little too big or a little too small. I would have to get one that is a little too big so it covers the whole bottom surface of my tent.

So how will i get my tent pens/stakes into the ground then?

Do I have to push the tent pens/stakes through the floor saver?

What have you guys done?

My wife and I have recently decided to take up hiking after going to amicalola falls state park in North Georgia. We went to the "hike Inn" near the park, and thoroughly enjoyed it. The only backpacking experience I've had was while I was in the military, and that was limited, but I had an issue LC-1 A.L.I.C.E. pack, with an external frame, and I don't think it fit me well, althgouh the basic design of the external frame has been around for a very long time, and has been tried in nearly every outdoor condition, I am thinking that that particular one just didn't fit me. Any thoughts? Preffereably those that have used both, although all answers are appreciated.

My friends and I go camping up that way a couple times a year, but we were looking for someplace we haven't been yet. We've been to water's creek a few times and love it there, but we want to try something new. We are also looking for something besides the basics of the state parks. Thanks.

Can anyone recommend a nice camp ground that has well maintained biking trails (not with tree stumps that have fallen over and not been removed etc), swimming, and is quiet?
