The location in NH doesn't really matter. I'm coming from MA so it wont be too long a drive either way. In terms of attractions a lake would be nice, but good hiking is a much stronger draw for me

Try the Lafayette campground in Franconia notch. You can hike right from the campground to Mirror Lake (easy hike) or go up to Lonesome Lake (moderate hike). You could also hike Cannon Mt. (harder hike) from this campground. Many attractions are close by: The Basin, Flume, Lost River, Lincoln and Woodstock to name a few.

It depends on how far north you want to go or to what attractions you may want to be near. There is lots to do in NH!

Call to make sure you can get in on the weekend you want and book it. NH is very very popular state wide and many people (lots of Canadians because NH is tax free) book a year in advance for some places if they are in popular locations like the White Mountains or the Sunapee areas.
