I would like to buy a floor saver/ground cover for my tent. My question is, none of them are exactly the same size as my tent. They will either be a little too big or a little too small. I would have to get one that is a little too big so it covers the whole bottom surface of my tent.

So how will i get my tent pens/stakes into the ground then?

Do I have to push the tent pens/stakes through the floor saver?

What have you guys done?

Just cut of fold it to your size, but do consider getting another indoor outdoor rug to put just under your tent and outwards for keeping down the soil from entering your tent. It makes a nice spot to kick back in the shade of your tent overhang too.

The reason you don't want it bigger than your tent is because water will then pool under your tent on the plastic and seep through to your tent, the exact outcome you are trying to avoid along with protecting your tent from punctures and not so nice surfaces.

A ground cover goes between the ground and the tent and should be a little smaller than the tent so moisture doesn't get between the ground cover and tent. The ground cover is usually a heavy plastic and can be cut with scissors. A floor saver goes inside the tent on the floor to protect the floor from getting worn or holes from shoes, etc. and could be made of any material which could be folded or cut to size.

Your floor saver should be a little bit smaller than the bottom of your tent. You do not want it to extend past the sides at all.

If it rains, water will run off the rain fly and hit the floor saver. Or just simply the rain itself hitting the edges of the floor saver. The water would then go under your tent and could eventually work its way up through the floor of your tent, especially if you have a tent that has sewn seams in the floor.

If you use a plan old fashioned tarp, remove the grommets. They would act as a wear zone if they happen to be in an area of the floor that would get a lot of usage. They could wear a hole in your tent floor.

Best option, if available, is to purchase a "foot print" from the manufacturer of your tent, for your specific tent model.

A lot of tent manufacturers sell footprints for their different tent models. They are fairly costly, considering what they are. Go to the hardware store and buy some really thick drop cloth (read PLASTIC) and cut it to match your tent's footprint. When it gets old and worn out, make yourself another.

I'd get the larger one and fold it to the size you need.
