I don't like anything made of cotton or down because they won't keep you warm if they get wet.

I use the sleeping bags. You don't need to use them when they are super little because most likely you will want to swaddle them. But once they start moving a bit or getting their arms out then that is when I started using the sleeping bags. If you know anyone that sews -- that works and is probably the cheapest. I love them, and my baby has used them from about 2 months to now (7.5 months) and will still use them for a while. They do make ones that are breathable (for warmer weather) etc. Although in the really warm weather you don't need any blankets most of the time. I don't live in the uk so I can't be a help there, sorry. (Maybe try online?)

You don't need much insulation so you can afford to spend some $ on a nice synthetic bag. Go to a backpacking a store and pick out one in your price range. Or order one, either way you get what you pay for, especially if you want it light, compact and are thinking of getting into more camping. For brands, it really doesn't matter. I like my North Face. I've noticed Mountain Hardware is a rip-off. avoid Wal Mart brands like Coleman, do your self a favour and go for the real deal.

Living in the southeast I would advise you to get two bags as money allows you to. I live down towards florida, I know what camping is like in the area. If you are going camping in the summer, early fall or late spring, you should rarely ever need anything better than a +40 degree sleeping bag. The average recatnglular cotton/nylon bag is rated to 40 degrees. However, if you ever want to go camping in the mountains or during the cool months (not really a winter down here). You would want a bag rated for +15 to +20 degrees. Many mummy bags have a rating near this. If you take a 40 degree bag camping on a night where it gets down to 45 degrees, you won't be very comfortable, trust me, I went down that road years ago.
As to where to get this bag, I would try to stay away from the mega-stores. Yes, they have them, and yes, they are cheap. But you pay for that in weight. I on a 15 degree bag that weighs a third of what one of the 40 degree bags wiegh that come from the mega stores. And I only paid 75 bucks for it with shipping. If you ever do go hiking with a heavy bag, you will curse it by the end of the trip.
Campmor.com has some great deals on sleeping bags of all shapes sizes and temp ratings
Here's a couple examples from their hot deals section

Definitely go with a Coleman or a Camper's Choice. Each once is temperature rated. You can pick what you want. I am an avid camper and these two brands are my favorites.

My North Face has given me years of good service. You just have to remember to NOT roll it up when not in use as it will greatly reduce it ability to keep you warm.
I live in North Georgia where I have camped in -10 degrees in the hills up there. I wouldnt want to do that with a 30 degree bag though.
Best of Luck!

If you dont want to spend much, Coleman is just fine. If you want better quality, Slumberjack & North Face are great!
