The last of the New Testament books were not written until nearly 100, and the books of the New Testament were not definitively chosen until the Synod of Hippo in AD 393. Thus, Bible-only Christianity could not have existed during the four centuries after the birth of Christ, right? As a further problem, a very small percentage of people were literate then.

Could Christianity have been passed on by oral traditions without a Bible?

Before Christianity exsited. Let's say way back in the early days of Greece what did the word mean that we say as Church in the English language?

Just a fun question...thanks.

(Whoops...just asked this in the wrong category...)

I just stopped by the Yahoo home page and spied this article:

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20071115/ap_en_ot/praying_for_hollywood

It's a good thing I hadn't eaten supper yet or I think I would have thrown up. I couldn't even make it through the whole article. This is the best thing that these people can think to pray about?

so everyone says that there is no evidence for jesus or the bible or that any of it is accurate but could you not say that for just about all of ancient history? why is everyone focusing on jesus and christianity? how do we really know that china had many dynasties a long time ago? if people dont believe that jesus existed because everything that was written about him was by his disciples and "crazy" people that claim to talk to this "weird" god and they were all lying could that not be true for all other ancient things? chinese dynasties? ancient wars? things that have no proof other than what people have written down on stone tablets and painted on walls? could they not have been lying? could they not have been "crazy" too? why only question christianity and not everything else?

if 9/11 never happened i think there wouldn't be harsh racist against Muslims, and so much stereotypes when you think of the word "Islam" or "Muslim". Cause me as a Muslim its has shaped me to become proud of my religion and i think everyone should be proud of what they are. And i really don't believe that Muslims where part of 9/11 and i don't need you guys to explain that. So how has 9/11 changed your perspective on Muslims, and how would America and the whole world be if 9/11 didn't happen? Please be kind and respect i want to discuss this like grownups.

I had an experience once. As I approached a doorway, and then another. The spirits there, faces were blurry at first. But were smiling when I got closer. Made me think they could have just as easily appeared frightening to someone who wasn't allowed to be there yet.

imagine if you will, the first group of apes that develop the ability to reason. the apes that grow tired of the silverbacks getting all the action, make up a story about the sun god wanting them to have monogamous relationships so the smarter apes can have some fun. when more problems confront the clever apes they invent more sun god rules, and the blind stay blind.

Do you believe the (99.9999%) of scientists from all areas (biology, evolutionary bio, genetics, etc.) who believe in the theory of evolution are lying? Or do you believe that they are just misguided? Do creationists just shrug off science? Whats the reasoning? Just curious.

I mean have you ever actually seen anyone walking down the street thumping on their bible? We talk about God's word and share it when we can. Just something I have wondered about......where did that term ever come from I wonder? I guess if someone would play the candlesticks you could have a pretty good band.

“Truth always rests with the minority, and the minority is always stronger than the majority, because the minority is generally formed by those who really have an opinion, while the strength of a majority is illusory, formed by the gangs who have no opinion -- and who, therefore, in the next instant (when it is evident that the minority is the stronger) assume its opinion... while truth again reverts to a new minority.” ~ Soren Kierkegaard

Yet, I have been to some "christian" churches where members get up and confess their sins to the congregation.

Others attack on the validity of the Catholic Sacrament of Reconciliation. However, they do not understand the Catholic faith because Catholics as a matter of fact do ask God for forgiveness everyday, if they are living their faith correctly. We also make an act of contrition at every Sunday mass, begining with "We confess to Almighty God..."

In addition to these, Catholics are blessed to receive healing and forgiveness through the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Also, all minor occasions of sin are wiped clean every time a Catholic receives communion. You who oppose the Catholic Church and Her Holy Sacraments, instead of condemning and criticizing, should praise God for His mercy on Catholic sinners.

To paraphrase Jesus, which is easier to do: Vocally confess to a living person and bring your sins into the light, or keep your sins in secret and in the dark?

Since laughter is some kind of "escape from reality" similar to the play of children:

"If relaity refuses the gratification of a certain pleasure, we seek its gratification in the imagination. "
(Sigmund freud)

Do you think humour is a way to avoid certain displeasures, like finding yourself in a humiliating situation, and realising that laughing at it is somewhat the best way to forget about it?

So, love is holy, right? If love is sacred, then why are you condeming homosexuals? They love. Sure, the Bible says that people shouldn't be homosexual, but they love each other, and should have the freedom to express it. Not only that, but their acts and expressions of love don't have any effect on you, so why are you worrying? A lot of Christians talk about how racism is bad, and all this stuff, but you don't stop and consider the fact the homosexuals are people with minds and hearts just like you. Why don't you just back off, and let them have the same freedoms and rights you do? They live in this free country too, so I'm not seeing the point or the good in you speaking for the rest of us and telling them that they cannot accepted, and they can't make the promise to love and honor each other, when most of us can accept in a second. Doesn't the Bible also say that what we hold true on earth is true in heavan? Back off here, and they'll be saved just like you say you want them to be.
