Since laughter is some kind of "escape from reality" similar to the play of children:
"If relaity refuses the gratification of a certain pleasure, we seek its gratification in the imagination. "
(Sigmund freud)
Do you think humour is a way to avoid certain displeasures, like finding yourself in a humiliating situation, and realising that laughing at it is somewhat the best way to forget about it?

Yes, I laugh at myself all the time! It does help a person recover from embarrassing situations, or even from making little mistakes. I take a few dance classes that are pretty fast-paced, and on occasion I end up doing something that is NOT looking right...only way I can keep going and not be totally frustrated with myself is to laugh at myself and move on. I'm a pretty competitive person, so learning to laugh at myself in these types of situations was a big step that came with adulthood. It's a really healthy way to deal!

Yes, laughter is good for you, but I'd rather be the kind of person that laughs at herself than makes fun of other people.

Humor is my defense mechanism. If I wasn't able to see the funny side to any situation -- even if the funny side is pretty twisted -- I'd be a horrible person to be around.
I think being able to laugh at yourself is probably one of the most important abilities any of us can have.

Oh, sure. Remind me to tell you how I almost broke 8 fingers by packing a suitcase on the floor.

Yes, I am able to laugh at myself, but there's never been a need for me to do that, and I don't expect that I will ever need to. I am just that good.

If you can't find (and laugh at) your own flaws, then I think most males would go mad as young boys.
I at least, remember to this day the countless barrages of banter and mum jokes of my teens and they carry on this day.. If you can't laugh at your self, then you can't really laugh at anything.

Oh, yeah definitely, especially if it's something funny hidden (or incidentally found) in something serious or innocent, if its a naughty joke. It lets us see light in darkness.
