The terms "Bible-thumpers" or "pulpit-pounders" comes from the habit of some ministers (usually rather fundamentalist ones who get very agitated) to pound or "thump" their pulpit with the book.

The term bible thumpers represents christians who only use bible references, and/ or those who view/use the bible as the only source of knowledge.
It is a term used to mock and/or degrade people who fit such category. These such people are often ignorant of art and other forms of expression and as such are inept in many areas of life. To sheild there inabillities they essentially hold the bible up and say they are holier then thou (whoever thou might be)
They are outcasts incapable of surviving in a social, pollitical or economical enviornment. The bible happens to offer a kind word to such people... As such they feel it neccesary to attack people who are different in any form then they are. From different faith to denomination. In these encounters they tend to spew bible verse and proclaim, "the only truth is right here. *touchs/smacks Thumps a bible*
There are bible thumpers who are not ignorant and inept. They just take it literal. (a literal book it is not. I have read a little and i can tell its not from a sheer analytical perspective of writting)
In truth bible thumpers are rare. Most people who would fall into this category save themselves by having a shred of outside wisdom or knowledge.
So the use of the term means "wake up". or its just an insult. Sadly the use of words as meaning is fast becoming a lost art. Giving way to childish name calling.
In the second sense yu could sy they mean that they dont care about the bible and it has no meaning for them. But its a rare circumstance.

personally, I think if someone called me a Bible thumper, I would take it as a compliment. I don't thump mine but I do treasure the words and find great delight in reading it. It is powerful, dynamic, and can change ones final destination. God communicates through it! It is the Word of God.

I use the term "Bible-thumper" to the militant Christians who deny any other train of thought, who get ticked off if you don't believe exactly what they do, who cannot comprehend why you don't, and who try to cram Christianity down your throat. The ones who can hold a conversation about Jesus or spirituality or validate your points in conversation whilst not getting ticked or losing any faith in what they believe, who can defend their beliefs with understanding the others...well, I simply call them "Christian".

I don't know for certain, but I'm going to guess that at least one famous evangelist used to thump his Bible on the pulpit while preaching. What I want to know is where the term "holy rollers" came from.

The habit of pounding the bible on the pulpit while giving a sermon started the "Bible Thumpers" name.

Nowadays, this means people who talk only about the bible when socializing. Bible thumpers are people who get excited about the Bible and want only to talk about the Bible and nothing else.

As a kid, we used to have an old door-to-door christian fire-and-brimstone preacher who would expound his opinions by thumping on the cover of his bible with a closed fist.
Since I was young, I always called door-to-door religious salespeople 'thumpers'.

It is a stereotype formed by those old time preachers that were extremely vocal about their beliefs, and would quite literally "thump" their bibles, among other expressive actions.
