“Truth always rests with the minority, and the minority is always stronger than the majority, because the minority is generally formed by those who really have an opinion, while the strength of a majority is illusory, formed by the gangs who have no opinion -- and who, therefore, in the next instant (when it is evident that the minority is the stronger) assume its opinion... while truth again reverts to a new minority.” ~ Soren Kierkegaard

johnny q that is true. It is all a matter of perception & perspective. If this was asked to Christians many times thru-out history, they would have agreed with it immediately. But because it was asked with now and Atheists in mind, some dismiss it immediately.

It depends what time you are on at, If all the us is asleep, there are mostly atheists from the UK and europe.
I agree with th statement, it is also compounded with the fact that a majority will feel protective about the feelings of a minority, often more touchy than the minority itself, look at how jokes are being censred, most minorities can laugh at themselves, but a majority making a joke at their expense is frowned upon my majority people.

And, people hate the truth, can't stand the truth and will do anything to deny the truth.

Your quote may to true to some degree, on some topics, but overall it is simply a quote from someone with an opinion that wants the minority to be right. In this case you want the minority to be right and so that is "your" truth. As you see it.

And, you tell a lie long enough, loud enough and be as righteous about it as possible, it becomes the "new" truth.

It seems very true that the "strength of the majority is illusory." The majority of the majority consists of people who don't care or don't feel the need to form an opinion on the issue. They don't actually support the opinion of the majority - they just don't oppose it.

I like the quote, but is it true? I'm not sure.
Kierkegaard was a theologian so when he writes this, ultimately he sees Christians as the minority. Maybe Atheists are the minority in the US but in the whole world?
It's all perspective right...?

Not quite...
The majority *can* be rght.
And there are better quotations pointing out the weakness of democratic or mob opinion as a guide to truth.

Personal new quote of the day:
"I had an opinion a mile wide and an inch deep."

Radio interview with a man, on his stance in favour of the death penalty, who then found himself on death row.
(He's now been cleared and the real murderer convicted)

I'd have to agree, in a general sense. The majority usually are the one's who do it because it's the "in" thing to do... or because friends and family do it... peer pressure drives them. While people within a minority are usually very individualistic and stand on their own with only the lable to link them to other individuals. But when it comes to religion (or lack of it), there are actually many minorities compared to Mainstream.

I agree although I do not agree with his philosphy of existentialism.

Bottom line, gangs are for followers, not leaders, and usually cowards, who, because they cannot face someone individually, they must gang up on them.

Thats why when someone gets jumped by 4 people; 4 on 1 in a clan is cowardice, too afarid to fight the opponent themselves.

I think it explains why a lot of the (Protestant) Christian majority aren't really Christian, but just non-opinionated drones, while atheists, have such a strong opinion, they join the minority for their beliefs and don't become one of the sheeple. This goes for Muslims, Jews and other religions too.

It has the ring of truth to it, but nothing is absolute. There are so many people who are perfectly happy to let others think for them and follow like sheep. So, I have to agree on the most part.
