They are not really opposite, because the baptist faith was born out of protesantism, which is born out of Catholicism. Baptists hold some beliefs purposefully because they are opposed to Catholic beliefs, such as baptism by choice (baptist) instead of baptism as a sign of our helplessness and God's gift of mercy (Catholic). Baptists only have one sacrament (baptism) where as Catholics have seven (baptism, confirmation, reconciliation, Holy Eucharist, matrimony, Holy Orders and Annointing of the Sick or Last Rites). Another major difference is permanent salvation or "once saved, always saved" (baptist) vs. the biblical "working out our salvation with fear and trembling" (Catholic).
There are some other outward differences on issues that don't matter so much, such as married clergy (baptist) vs. celibate priests (Catholic), etc.
Further than that, it would depend on WHICH Baptist tradition you're talking about, because they've splintered again in the protestant way. If you're protestant and you don't like what your preacher is saying, you go down the road a spell, build a new church and start a new denomination.

Catholic and Baptists are about as opposite as two Christian religions can get. What is in between them Methodist is probably the closest to the middle.
Brendon: Not all protestant faiths are the same by any means.

There is no opposite, Catholicism is the original christian faith, until Martin Luther started the Reformation in Renaissance Germany the only way that you could be a christian was to be a Catholic. Luther broke away and his followers are the Lutherans, England broke away and they are the Anglicans, Calvin broke away and they are the Presbyterians, Baptists are another of these Protestant faiths...get it? "Protest"ant faiths, they protested and broke away from the Catholic (universal) church.

In my experience as growing up Catholic and now being Baptist Christian is having a relationship with Jesus.
Jesus reveals the Father to us.
To the 2 guys above me...
Jesus did not found the Catholic Church. Nowhere in the Bible does it say that.
See that's why I left the Catholic religion, they believe and tell lies.

Baptists are Protestants, Catholics are not. The differences are basically the same as between Catholics and any other Protestant group.

with all due respect to my brother Spoken4 yes Jesus did establish the Catholic Church. The word Catholic is Latin for Universal. He said to Peter upon this rock I will build my church. And to all you "so la Scripture" thumps. Jesus did not say upon this bible I I will build my church. The bible did not exist yet. Yes there were many falling aways from Jesus org church and all of Christianity is part of the bride of Christ .Prob the Episcopal church is somewhere in the middle. Lets all concentrate on what we have in com men, a belief Ibo Christ and let God worry about what divides us.

Baptist are Christians..... Katholiks are not.
Katholicism is more closer to Judaism and Mormonism, then it is to Christianity.
