Maybe the problem that religion has when confronting atheism, is that the various religions were designed to oppose other religions, not a lack of religion. Now that atheism is on the rise, the various religions simply aren’t equipped with the necessary armament to combat atheism. Religions seem to be in a perpetual arms race with each other using weapons of fear and superstition whereas atheism has only logic and reason at its disposal and these cannot be countered with fear and superstition.

You're out, minding your own business when suddenly you're the victim of violent crime. An innocent passerby who happens to be atheist runs to your defense and, while saving your life, gets killed. You're alive. He's dead. Did he just go to hell?

I'm not expecting too many answers but thank you in advance for those of you who attempt it.

Also, as always, if you get thumbs-down, they didn't come from me. I don't do the thumbs-down thing. Thanks again.

First, a definition is in order: what is Purgatory?

Purgatory is not Hell minus a few torments and degrees Fahrenheit; it's not Heaven minus joy. It's not a "Third Final Destination" of souls. Purgatory is simply the place where already saved souls are cleansed of the temporal effects of sin before they are allowed to see the holy face of Almighty God. Revelation 21:27 tells us that "...nothing unclean will enter [Heaven]."

Daniel 12:2, Matthew 12:32, 1 Corinthians 3:13-15, 2 Timothy 1:16-18, Hebrews 12:14, Hebrews 12:22-23, 1 Peter 4:6 and Revelation 21:10, 27 all speak of Purgatory in their telling of the need for purification, prayers for the dead, Christ's preaching to the dead, or how nothing unclean will see God.

Even the The Talmud speaks of Purgatory:

Sabbath 33b:
"The judgment of the wicked in purgatory is twelve months."
Rosh HaShanah 16b-17a:
"It has been taught that the school of Shammai says: "There will be three groups on Judgment Day (yom haDin):

to offend anyone, but most of the people who choose to answer only deliver rudeness. I know there are many "religious" and non-religious people here who are attacked daily, but why is it that because of that, everyone has to be so jaded that you feel it necessary to insult someone just because you misunderstood the question and make them feel so lousy for asking a serious question. Do you not sometimes ask a question that you hope others will give you an honest non-judgemental answer. If so then why do you answer questions in the same manner. I hope you all have a wonderful day

(and to those who already know where this quote comes from, please don't give it away)

Christians, would you agree or disagree with the following quote.
"He that is slow to believe in anything and everything is of great understanding, for belief in one false principle is the beginning of all unwisdom."

1. My Christian/Catholic friends always seem to want to shove their beliefs down my throat, but my Jewish/Buddhist friends never do. Why is this?

2. Why can't people understand that you didn't really choose to be the religion you are? Most likely, your parents influenced you to think the way they do about religion.

3. If God is almighty and giving, why is he letting so many people in places like Africa live through such a horrible life?

Go ahead and be rude to me, it's just yahoo answers. I don't really care, I just wanted some opinions on these questions.

Richard Dawkins is a genius. He revoltionized the field of Evolutionary Biology with his book, the Selfish Gene. This book opened up biologists eyes as to how important genetics are to the evolutionary process. I think he is a very smart man who deserves a little more respect from the public. The scientific community has nothing but respect for Dawkins.
