Maybe the problem that religion has when confronting atheism, is that the various religions were designed to oppose other religions, not a lack of religion. Now that atheism is on the rise, the various religions simply aren’t equipped with the necessary armament to combat atheism. Religions seem to be in a perpetual arms race with each other using weapons of fear and superstition whereas atheism has only logic and reason at its disposal and these cannot be countered with fear and superstition.

Most Christians I run into aren't even interested in arguing. Their minds are made up, and no amount of reasoning with them will get them to even *consider* other viewpoints.

Of course, this is necessary, because those who *do* consider other views often leave Christianity, since Christianity is pretty bankrupt at this point.

I find it funny that some Christians, like the guy who posted right before I did, use words like "over-educated," as if too much education is bad for you.
And by the way, we already know the arguments from the leading Christian intellectuals. I've argued personally with J.P. Moreland, and I've read Phillip Johnson and Michael Behe and William Dembski. Guys like Kent Hovind are not even worth mentioning. Lee Strobel is even dumber than Hovind.

Christian apologetic arguments *all* fall flat.

In fact, one of the main reasons I began to consider atheism in the first place was that I noticed how childish all the supposedly respectable Christian arguments were.

I am a Theist but I really don't see the need to combat Atheism. In my religion, Hinduism, I actually believe that the 2 are compatible in a way. Hinduism has accomodated various beliefs about God, from polytheism, to monotheism, pantheism, Atheism, and a whole lot of other -theisms (a lot of times they just make up words to describe Hinduism, like kathenotheism).

My view is that there is a God, but I do not feel that someone is in dire trouble if they don't agree with me on that. I have seen first-hand that Atheists can be among the most moral and kind people on earth. So the claim that some make that Atheists have no moral base is just wrong. And in fact, Atheists rightfully challenge the Theist into understanding that morality is not really "moral" if it's only done to avoid punishment and gain reward. We are reminded by the Atheist that we must be good for the sake of being good, and not because of the selfish desire for reward. So we can learn from Atheism to be better, more altruistic people, if we would stop opposing it, and try to learn from it, just as "we" (well, I do anyway!) can learn from all religions.

Christianity was seen as a type of "Atheism" by the pagans of Rome, and they feared Christianity, because they were so afraid that the gods would not bless the empire if the people were not worshiping the gods and the emperor. So Christianity was actually on the other side of the argument at one point! And they basically won, historically speaking. So it's interesting to see what kind of arguments they will present to the Atheists, now that they find themselves in this position.

I realize this is several years old but I just came across it. There are all kinds of logical arguments against atheism. First, the profession of atheism is a definitive statement that God does not exist. What proof do they have that God does not exist? I'll tell you - none. They don't have a stick of proof. Yet this community loves to try to own the evidence market. One can argue to be an agnostic but there is no way anyone can honestly claim to be an atheist based on the evidence. For myself, all things denote that God exists. The way the human eye works. The magnitude of the universe. Everything in nature. Everything in existence. I don't know how it was created (evolution? - no problem there). I just know that there is a grand design behind things. And if you don't believe it, tell me when the last time your kid's room got clean all by itself.

What's your point? Are you stating that you want believers to sit here and argue with you? If so then why do you get so mad when a someone tries to prove their point to you, then you say " stop trying to convert us ".. This post is hypocritical. As far as evidence... No one is going in circles. Every religion has many reasons why someone should be a believer, But you never agree and never will. So what proof are you looking for? Physical?

What proof do you have that religions are wrong? Some scientific data? For people who can't even put funds to research things that make sense such as a cure for cancer... It sure is easy for "science" to say such a big thing as God doesn't exist. And I get bet anything that half of atheist don't bother researching at all about religion before declaring it false.

Also, I'm not saying all atheists believe what you do so I wont put them in a category because if this post..

So stop breeding hatred if you don't want any...

I didn't know athesim was on the rise...I'm sure if I were an atheist, and hypothetically if Christianity was on the rise that wouldn't have me scared, so I don't think the reverse would follow, UNLESS there was some smoking gun.

So, do you have a smoking gun ?

We live in an age where Christians are very influenced by the world, so perhaps that's why they may seem ineffectual.

I hated Born-Again Christians, then eventually became a Born-Again Christian myself, then witnessed God performed clear unquestionable miracles in my life, which strengthened my faith in Him.

I hate to speak negatively of my own "fold," but I wish Christians would stop talking about and singing songs referencing

Maybe your time will come.

I was "witnessed" to years ago by a good samaratin, and wasn't hearing any of it. A few years after that, I was "Caught." And haven't turned back after 29 years

Yea like finding 1 1/2 mile scattered fragments of bone from 2 different strata, putting them together, and then calling the 3 foot tall monkey amalgamation "Lucy". Saying that we sprung from soup. Abiogenesis (no explanation needed). Dating our beginning back to a time when no one was there to witness it. The planet is falling apart. And we are sleeping on top of nuclear weapons. What "logic"?

And by the way Islam is spreading like wild fire.

God bless

Very interesting point. Atheist may be the one element to destroy religion. Consider back in the past almost everyone was into some sort of religion. Due to science Atheism has acquired more logic and reason which has brought on more free thinkers.

desiree,
I see christians giving answers everytime I'm here.
I have yet to see an atheist, agnostic,or anti-christian give one piece of evidence:
God (Jesus) doesn't exist.
Where the blob (big bang) came from and how.
I have asked what pushes a galaxy cluster in it's mappable path (can you imagine one second of pushing, could power, the whole earth a long time).
Could I use some black cat firecrackers, in a junkyard,to produce a Lamborghini?
huddle with your anti-christian buds to give one "logical" answer.
note:
I don't mean gloating about condescending statements, claiming to be intellectual powerhouses.
Verbiages.

What I have seen is that, particularly the over-educated atheists seem to not want to reason. The answers or replies are most often a flat out refusal. The problem I see here is that there aren't any Christian debaters who can stand up to the atheists' arguments.

There are those Christian apologists who can win a debate against any atheist. I don't think they would waste their time on Yahoo Answers, though.

You would be surprised, though, at how many Christian apologists can line up against logic and reason with logic and reason. It has been done. I hope one shows up in YA soon in order to dispell your accusation.

No, I haven't noticed that. The atheists are the ones that run round and round in a circle because the only thing they have to believe in is evolution and that is extremely iffy.

The Christians have the whole Bible to confirm their beliefs and the Bible was written by many REAL MEN that were God inspired.....not by someone looking at or like a monkey.
Good luck on that argument. Pops
