Saying the Jesus Prayer

"Prayer is Not Optional"

A layman, at the St Vladimir's Seminary Summer Institute, wrote this sentence as the most important thing he learned all week.

Which Words

The classical form of the Jesus Prayer is,

"Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me, a sinner."
The actual words of our short prayers can vary. We might say the classic version of the Jesus Prayer, or we might say, "Lord Jesus Christ, have mercy on me." We may say, "Lord Jesus, have mercy." Or, we might say a Psalm verse, or a Bible quote, or some other prayer.

Monks of old said, "Lord, make haste to help me. Lord, make speed to save me," all day long.

The history of the Jesus Prayer goes back, as far as we know, to the early sixth century, with Diadochos, who taught that repetition of the prayer leads to inner stillness. Even earlier John Cassian recommended this type of prayer. In the fourth century Egypt, in Nitria, short "arrow" prayers ...

There are lots of stories I read about doppelgangers. And most of it says that they died right after they saw their doppelganger. But, according to Jesus, each one of us are unique. So how come there are doppelgangers? Are they really real?

...Isn't it appalling that much of humanity has reverted to 'dark age' reasoning (with regards to scientific and religious thinking)?

(Note: Of course we have discovered and invented many things since then - but I'm talking about our 'way of thinking' - and not about our 'advanced gadgets' or our 'humanitarian ways'.)

An infidel is a person who has no belief in God, it should be made quite clear that all Muslims must accept people of the book (Quran) as their brothers.
The Quran includes teachings from the Torah and the Bible and I quote from the Holy Quran.

Surah (AL BAQARAH)
[2:62] Surely, those who believe, those who are Jewish, the Christians, and the converts; anyone who (1) believes in GOD, and (2) believes in the Last Day, and (3) leads a righteous life, will receive their recompense from their Lord. They have nothing to fear, nor will they grieve.

I hope that Muslims everywhere take this to heart, and I hope that all you believers out there understand that any true Muslim has nothing against you, and if they do they will be severely punished by God for it.

If so, did the sins that are transgressions of the Ten Commandments exist beforehand?
Most laws we bring in do not retrogressively make acts illegal and punish people for them, due to our acceptance of the concept of natural justice. If God is a perfect being, then surely his laws should also be perfect and hence not so unfair as to act retrogressively?
This is different to breaking a law or committing a sin and saying that you were not aware that that was what you were doing.
If you believe that the Ten Commandments did act retrogressively, do you believ that the sinners therefore went to Hell?
If you believ that the Ten Commandments were effective only from their delivery to us, why did God choose that moment to deliver them? Were we incapable of sin beforehand, or did God want to wait and see how we behaved without his laws first?

My local church pastor and I differed over some church and family issues. Nowadays, every Sunday, his Bible verse readings and sermons seem clearly rehearsed and delivered to justify his views and position before the congregation while demonizing me, just stopping short of condemning me to Hell-fire!

Is there any truth to this?
I know most will say no, but i'm looking for a deeper answer...
Almost daily on our News they show us mass Anti-America/Israel demonstrations in the Mid-East, or huge gatherings of people signing up to be Martyrs. The videos are real and numours so how can you say that there's not some truth to it?
Is radical Islamic terrorism getting out of control (no thanks to Bush) And no one wants to admit it?
And before you answer "no" to my question, ask yourselves this: Could it be that you're victims of your Country's own propaganda?
Here's a good example of what I'm talking about:

I bought a second-hand bible on E-bay, I won the bid. There are several missing pages:

What chapter in the Bible says ‘you shall love your neighbour as yourself, except homosexuals, and you shall oppose everyone who is or who thinks differently from you?’ And what did Jesus really meant when he said, "Love your neighbour?

In other words, do religious folks tend to ‘cherry-pick’ the passages and parts which suit them, even though they make claims of embracing the ‘entire’ Bible as literal? Or do religious folks really insinuate their cultural biases, and then make claims that they are sufficiently supported by Biblical mandate, when in fact, they are subjective and relative?

Jesus demonstrated his love toward us by taking God's wrath upon himself so that we might be saved. Would you be willing to do the same thing? Would you be willing to give up your eternal salvation and endure hell for all eternity if it meant that somone you loved, perhaps an unsaved family member, would be saved? Would you be willing to do it for a stranger? What about the worst of sinners?

I just finished watching a show about serial killers. During the show they mentioned that many serial killers have similar physical problems in the brain. There may be a natural cause for someone to become such a killer. If (just imagine) someday scientist found genes that made someone a murderer regardless of how they are raised and were able to locate serial killers before they were born, would that justify an abortion if the person knew their child would grow up to be a killer? (remember, this is hypothetical, so don't say it can't happen)
